P7J – What have we been up to during term 1?

By Reece, Ethan, Reece and Lewis

1.In our Topic materials from Earth we found out what the difference between rocks and minerals is.

2.We were also learning about volcanoes and all of the different types of volcanoes such as Cinder Cone, shield and composite then we also created our own volcanoes to erupt them.

Fantastic volcano models made by all using limited resources and within a set time limit.  We used vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to create our eruptions – ask us about the chemical reaction that took place!

3.In French we did weather it was quite hard trying to pronounce them but it was quite easy to know what they were eg. Il fait du soleil means sunny!

4.We found out about Leonardo da Vinci and we tried to figure out why the Mona Lisa was smiling because back in the day people didn’t really smile and we tried recreating it and think about why she was smiling.

5.When doing tennis in P.E we were learning from Judy Murry and learning new tricks with the rackets and using balloons to master them.

6.Over the past few weeks we have been doing leadership with Lynsey Hog trying to develop our communication and creating skills through games like tig and capture the flag.

National Numeracy Parental Engagement Project

National Numeracy Parental Engagement Project

The school is delighted to have been selected to work with the independent charity National Numeracy on an exciting project which encourages children and families to do maths together.

Please click on the following link for more information:

https://www.nationalnumeracy.org.uk/our-work/projects/parental-engagement

As part of this project, we would like you to complete the following short survey online telling us about your views and feelings about maths and your child’s learning. The survey will take just 5-10 minutes. It is anonymous and goes straight to National Numeracy, no names are shared with the school. There is also a chance to win £50 of books and games for your child if you complete the survey.

Please click on the link to complete:

https://nn.typeform.com/to/xLcyBnNU

Please complete by 31st October, 21

There is also a survey for pupils. P4 – 7 have been asked to complete this in class. If you have a child in p1 – 3, could you help them complete it at home? This is the link for pupils:

https://nn.typeform.com/to/zZhpUjbX

Also, as part of this, we will be starting to use National Numeracy’s Family Maths scrapbooks. These will be sent home with your child. Parents and carers can also get involved with an online resource for parents being provided by National Numeracy.

We know that maths can sometimes seem daunting but engaging positively with children’s learning can make a big difference to both children’s and parents’ confidence with numbers.  In a similar project, 88% of children said they increased their confidence with maths and 86% of parents said they increased their confidence in helping their children with maths.

You don’t have to be a maths expert to be able to support your children, but improving your own confidence with maths – if you need to – can help you feel more comfortable doing so.

We are offering all parents the chance to learn online with the National Numeracy Challenge.

The Challenge is a free and easy-to-use website that aims to help adults brush up without pressure on the numeracy skills which are needed in work and everyday life. Signing up gives you the chance to find out where your skills are, practise some of the things you find difficult and access online learning resources at the right level for you. Your activity on the Challenge is confidential and will not be reported to the school.

We are encouraging all parents and carers to register here www.nationalnumeracy.org.uk/challenge/hurlpar

We hope that you will take the opportunity and make the most of this exciting project.

Have fun!

Inclusion Week – Helping Hands

As part of Inclusion Week the Primary 7 pupils liaised with staff and pupils and selected some resources that they thought would support pupils in their learning.  These resources include fidget aids, spellcheckers, ACE dictionaries, ear defenders, coloured overlays and reading rulers.

These resources were then all put together as a Helping Hands pack and issued to P4 – P7 classes.  It has to be reiterated that these are learning aids and not toys.

A thank you to Mr and Mrs Milligan who donated £100 to the school to purchase spell checkers – they are an invaluable support to some of our pupils.

Nikki Manson Visit

Nikki Manson

Our pupils really enjoyed Nikki’s visit to the school this afternoon.  They participated in the circuits activity (looking very red faced) and then participated in a question and answer session using TEAMS.  It was such an honour to have a Scottish record holder in the school and we wish Nikki all the best in her future competitions.  Please click on the link above for more information about Nikki.

Thank you so much to all who fund raised – Nikki received £1400 and the school £2100 – a fantastic amount!  Thank you.

Have a lovely week.

JRSO HELMET SAFETY COMPETITION WINNERS

The JRSOs had a very tricky job today deciding the class winners for the Design a Helmet competition.  We are delighted to announce that Alfie, Grace, Millie, Alexa, Annie, Tanisha, Summer, Harry and Eilidh were all chosen!!

The over all winner was Millie and she won a cycling helmet.  She declined a new one  as she said she already had one so is going to choose from a hat the name of a pupil from her class who does not have a helmet.   This is so kind and thoughtful!  Well done Millie.

However she didn’t leave empty handed . . .  .

She selected a new drawing pad with a pack of pencils and pens!

Disney Musicals in School – Aladdin

I am delighted to let you know that our school has been successful in our application to take part in  the above Disney Musicals in Schools project . We are one of four schools in Scotland, who have been selected, which is, of course, a great honour !

This is a three year partnership . Primary 5 and Primary 6 pupils will take part this session. The production culminates in our pupils performing at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow and putting on a show to pupils and the wider community in February, hopefully!! Covid dependent.

Our Scottish Opera partners will lead and support workshops on Thursdays from 1.15- 2.45pm for 17 weeks and we have to do a 90minute follow up rehearsal each week on a Monday from 1.15-2.45pm. Although, the main classes involved are P5 and P6, we hope to involve other stages in props, costumes, advertising, etc.

We will, of course, ensure that COVID mitigations continue and we have our risk assessment in place, in liaison with our Health and Safety colleagues.

I hope you will agree it sounds a great opportunity for our school!! We will of course invite you to our production.

P7F Weekly Blog 1.10.21

This week in P7F we have been learning what solids dissolve. We found out coffee does dissolve, sugar and salt do dissolve but we put too little water but too much of the solid. We were doing leadership training with Lindsay. We also entered the COP26 competition. We finished co-ordinates in maths, continued our new materials of earth topic and we got a bag between 2 and filled them with water and made evaporation and condensation.
