Using Class Wikis for Collaborative Revision

Mr Crosbie’s Higher English class at Grange Academy have been using Glow Wikis for class revision. As part of the class’s Glow group the class have produced wikis for the key texts being studied – The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Romeo and Juliet. Groups of pupils were given responsibility for a theme to be studied, e.g. Conflict, and to contribute to a comprehensive set of notes on that theme on the wiki. These notes then formed a study resource for the whole class to access in preparation for the exam.

This has been a very successful revision exercise for the class and highlights how wikis can be used for effective collabotation in a class setting. Glow wikis allow pupils to create their own texts and resources within the context of their class Glow group.

If you are interested in using wikis with your class and would like support please contact me – ross.mcgregor@east-ayrshire.gov.uk.

Get involved in Glow Wikis!

Wikis have arrived on Glow - this opens up exciting possibilities for 21st century teachers and learners. To get started you could take part in Scotland’s Schools wiki - a national collaborative project designed to give every school in Scotland its own wiki page. To add you own school’s page just go to the East Ayrshire page and follow the simple instructions.

Wikis are very easy to use page-building tools, with a focus on collaboration. They are ideal for class use. Get pupils involved with a class or group wiki. They’ll love it!

There is support for wikis on the EA Glow Champions Group, including demo wikis to have a look at and experiment with. There is also an excellent post on Getting Started with Glow Wikis on the Glow Cookbooks site.

Support for Glow Wikis

There is a page on the Glow Champions Group dedicated to Glow Wikis. This includes one demo wiki which interested staff are welcome to test and experiment with. More demo wikis will be added with different layouts for different uses.

There is also a link to an excellent post on the Glow Cookbooks site - Getting Started with Glow Wikis. This gives some great examples of class wikis from schools across Scotland.

Glow Wikis

Glow wikis have arrived! A wiki can be added to a Glow group from the webpart menu, and similarly with a blog, it can be used independently of the Glow group once it has been created. Here is an example – https://wikis.glowscotland.org.uk/0000003/A_Sample_Glow_Wiki.

There are a few Help articles on using Glow wikis here – https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/glowblogs/GlowingHelp/2010/12/21/glow-wikis-an-overview/.

Essentially wikis are websites that are ideal for collaboration, allowing multiple users to contribute content and pages. They are ideal for sharing, as part of a class, school, or other network.

Remember to set status of the wiki to determine who can access it.
