Good morning everyone! Hope you all had a lovely weekend.

Check-in question – What did you do at the weekend?
I went out 2 really long walks in the lovely sunshine and got organised for something that’s happening today. I’ll fill you in later on!

I have set some tasks for you today and remember to do what you can, when you can!

Today is World Ocean Day, you can visit this website for some information and activities:

Literacy

Spelling – Adding suffixes

Short vowel words e.g. hop, need the final consonant to be doubled before adding endings (suffixes) which start with a vowel.
E.g. hop + p + ing = hopping, shop + p + er = shopper.
Short vowels
These are the ‘sounds’ the letters make as opposed to their name.  The five vowels usually called ‘short’ are:
  • ‘a’ as in ‘cat.
  • ‘e’ as in ‘red’
  • ‘i’ as in ‘sit’
  • ‘o’ as in ‘not’
  • ‘u’ as in ‘bus’
Long Vowels
The five vowels usually called ‘long’ and which children are told to say their ‘letter name’ are:
  • ‘a’ as in ‘paper’
  • ‘e’ as in ‘be’
  • ‘i’ as in ‘find’
  • ‘o’ as in ‘go’
  • ‘u’ as in ‘human’
Can you make a list of short vowel words where the last consonant needs to be doubled before adding a suffix?
Set your list out like this:
hop – hopping
shop – shopper
Check that all of your words have a double consonant in the middle.
