Health Week
Day 1: Karate, Super Tattie and Mindfulness Club
Today the Primary 6/7 pupils enjoyed a visit from Sensi Liam who delivered a fun and full of laughter introductory session to Karate. The pupils learned lots of different moves inclucidng kicks and blocks by taking part in a variety of drills.
Following on from this session, all pupils have been invited to attend a 2 week no obligations free trial. Pupils who were interested should have a leaflet in their bags this evening.
The pupils were also surprised by a visit from SuperTattie the East Ayrshire School Lunches mascot who spent the play time in our playground.
Some pupils from our class who are in the Health and Wellbeing Pupils School Improvement Committee lead a mindfulness lunchtime club for pupils from across the school. They participated in mindful colouring and the classroom felt very calm and relaxed.
We created placemats, completed a problem solving challenge, participated in games in the garden and finished off with lunch outside. A great day to remember!
Today we reviewed what environmental dignity, equity and equality are and what they look like as part of our environmental eco plan.
P7 visited the ECC to lead and participate in STEM activities. This included programming with BeeBots, making playdough and construction. P7 really enjoyed interacting with the children from the ECC and can’t wait to visit again!
Children explored the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and considered how the ability to access health systems is linked to a child’s right to the best possible health, Article 24, freedom of expression and to freedom from discrimination.
In chapter 12 of Welcome to Nowhere the character Eman was introduced to Balil, who Omar referred to as ‘Mr Nosey’ as he scared Uncle Ali away at the start of the story in Bosra because of his political views. In this chapter we begin to see arrangements being made for Eman’s arranged marriage to Balil. The children took on the character roles of Baba and Eman to debate whether this was the right path for her. They identified and matched UNCRC rights of 2- non-discrimination; 5- right to guidance by family; 7-right to name and nationality; 12-right to an opinion; 14-right to have own views and 28-access to education.
Science Week: P1 Visits P6/7
Wormeries
Yesterday the Primary 1 pupils visited our class to show and discuss their learning as part of Science Week. They showed the P6/7 pupils the wormeries they had made. The P6/7 pupils were very engaged when listening to the confident P1 pupils sharing what they had been up to and everything they had learned. The P6/7 pupils were excellent role models showing great listening skills and respect toward the younger pupils.
Science Week: Chemical Reactions with Mrs Hosie
Mrs Hosie returned on Monday this week to deliver lessons on chemical reactions to each class. During these lessons Mrs Hosie involved the pupils in the coke and Mentos experiment. The pupils were encouraged to think of a hypothesis, before the experiment then consider the reasons for the chemical reaction that took place. They learned that when the Mentos sink to the bottom of the cola bottle, carbon dioxide bubbles are created. As the bubbles risethey react with more carbon dioxide which is still in the cola building up lots of pressure which creates an eruption of the liquid.
British Science Week: Ayrshire College
We were very lucky to have two lecturers (Derek and Shona) from Ayrshire college today and deliver an excellent and informative workshop to our class. They set up a crime scene (The Case of the Missing Sweets) and explained different aspects of evidence. The pupils worked round different stations to analyse evidence samples, carrying out a range of tests. This helped the pupils to identify the prime suspect who turned out to be Mr Houston. Different stations included, chromatography (testing the ink from the ransom note), fingerprints (identifying different types of finger print and determining which suspect’s print matched the crime scene print), FITR (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) to analyse the sticky sweet residue and pH sampling (saliva sample). Finally, Shona demonstrated a flame test using different soil samples which the pupils loved as each sample gave off a different coloured flame due to containing different chemicals (based on where they have come from).
The workshop was so engaging and the pupils all had great fun whilst learning lots of new skills. Derek and Shona commented on how they enjoyed visiting the school and seeing the excitement among the pupils.
