It is<br \/>\ncrucial, therefore, that we value children\u2019s and young people\u2019s<br \/>\nhome languages and see these as a rich resource for learning,<br \/>\ndeveloping competences in the language of schooling. Through<br \/>\nsuch a rich range of home languages, we can also celebrate<br \/>\nthe linguistic and cultural heritage that bilingual learners bring<br \/>\nto the classroom and to the wider school community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; Learning in 2(+) Languages\u2019\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Currently over 20 languages are spoken in East Ayrshire including Polish, Russian, Arabic, Latvian, Chinese and Urdu.<\/p>\n<p>Who are English as an Additional Language pupils?\u200b<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u200bEnglish is not the dominant language at home.\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Some children may know some English alongside\u00a0another language, or languages.\u200b<\/li>\n<li>There may be children who are newly arrived\u00a0and from an isolated linguistic minority.\u200b<\/li>\n<li>Others will be part of an established community.\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The \u2018Learning in 2(+) Languages\u2019 report recognises that in order to promote achievement:\u200b<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Schools should build on pupils\u2019 learning and achievements, within and beyond school. Bilingual learners have a number of particular strengths including their experience of different languages.
