{"id":166,"date":"2021-02-11T15:15:37","date_gmt":"2021-02-11T15:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/eastayrshiresupportteam\/?page_id=166"},"modified":"2024-10-03T11:55:09","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T10:55:09","slug":"dyslexia","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/eastayrshiresupportteam\/additional-support-needs\/dyslexia\/","title":{"rendered":"Dyslexia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2009, the Scottish Government, Dyslexia Scotland and the Cross Party Group on Dyslexia in the Scottish Parliament agreed a working definition of dyslexia:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDyslexia can be described as a continuum of difficulties in learning to read, write and\/or spell, which persist despite the provision of appropriate learning opportunities. These difficulties often do not reflect an individual\u2019s cognitive abilities and may not be typical of performance in other areas\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone with dyslexia is different and will have\u00a0different<br \/>\nstrengths, difficulties and strategies that work for them. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<p>Possible Strengths:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can be very creative and enjoy practical tasks<\/li>\n<li>Strong visual thinking skills e.g. see\/think in 3D, visualise structure from plans<\/li>\n<li>Good verbal skills and good social interaction<\/li>\n<li>Good at problem solving, thinking outside the box, seeing the whole picture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Possible Areas of Development:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Problems with reading, taking notes, remembering numbers, names and details<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty with time keeping, managing time and organising work<\/li>\n<li>Difficulties with writing and spelling<\/li>\n<li>Short term memory problems, sequencing difficulties e.g. following\/giving instructions, directions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Concerns should only be raised if the difficulties continue and\/or do not change when supported. With the right support, children with dyslexia can reach their potential.
