The red and purples dinosaur exploration

Look at our red and purple groups exploration today of our garden area…

They found some dinosaurs and created an outdoor dinosaur world that they are developing over the course of the week. The children were also weaving the large branches through the pallet – super fine motor skills! Super exploration for our kiddies today in the outdoors.

It certainly felt a bit nippier in the air so please make sure you wrap your wee one up for the elements.

Speech and language support

Let’s talk about grammar!

Lots of wee ones don’t use correct grammar when they are learning to talk. They may say things like “Look at the mouses”, “me need the toilet”, “I felled” or use he/she/his/her incorrectly. This is part of normal language development, but there are ways to help them get their grammar right 😄

Try these strategies to help your child get all the little bits of their talking just right…

  1. Model: When the child says something that is grammatically incorrect, model to them the correct way of saying the sentence (e.g. child: “Me want to go home” adult: “I want to go home”)

  2. Story Books: Reading books helps model correct grammar use.

  3. Play: In play ask the child what is happening, what just happened or what might happen next (e.g. adult: “What is the baby doing?” child: “The baby is sleeping”; adult: Makes teddy jump and asks, “What did Teddy just do?” child: “Teddy jumped”; adult: “What will the dog do next?” child: “The dog will go to sleep”)

  4. Telling Stories: Encourage the child to tell you the story in a book using the pictures. The child will usually produce a simple sentence which will enable you to model the correct grammar if it is said incorrectly. The more the child practices telling the same story the more they will pick up on your models and improve their grammar in their story telling.

  5. Pronouns: When a child is learning about the pronouns ‘he/she’, explain to the child that “He is a boy and she is a girl”. You can then find pictures of boys and girls doing different actions and say a sentence about each picture (e.g. “He is jumping” or “She is laughing”)

  6. Pronoun ‘I’: When helping the child to learn how to use the pronoun “I” engage the child in different requesting activities where they have to ask for items (e.g. Mr Potato Head, puzzles, snack time, choosing a DVD, posting blocks)

Communication about progress & learning experiences

Evening all ECC parents,

Going forward I would like to highlight ways we are aiming to provide you all with relevant feedback about the going’s on inside the ECC, your child’s individual progress and learning experiences offered within the ECC.

As previously mentioned our blog will be used once I have the relevant permissions returned from all children and begin using as the blog more regularly to highlight visually what each group are doing throughout the week. Parents can look at the blog whenever they feel like it and look at it with their children at home.
There will be pictures of room set ups and learning experiences to show you what we are doing within the ECC.
* Please note this will be used as often as we can and sporadically throughout each week as we try to juggle running the ECC, looking after your children in the ECC playrooms and all other early years tasks *
We will also have termly reports for all parents regarding your child’s progress for that term under our 4 curriculum headings which will go out to parents late October, January, April and June.
These will go out via email and will be expected to be returned with parental comments to the ECC through email, so please make sure you are accessing all weekly newsletters via email and that I as Depute manager have all relevant up to date emails for your child.

We are also going to introduce weekly our “Talk to me Tuesdays/Thursdays” after the October holidays where your child will come home with stickers on their clothing regarding what they have been learning during their time within their cohorts. These stickers will be aimed at you having a discussion with your child about what they have done at nursery based on what is on their sticker. This is to let you know specific things your child has learned or enjoyed at nursery throughout the week and is a talking opportunity for you and your child.

I will also continue with weekly newsletters that will detail what your child has been doing in their cohorts, what they have been doing at group times in their cohorts, any relevant information or dates and snack for the following week.

I hope you find this information useful about how we will be going forward with communication about the ongoing learning and progress within the ECC and your child’s progress during this academic session and unprecedented times.

kind regards
Leanne Strathearn
