{"id":290,"date":"2019-10-18T09:42:06","date_gmt":"2019-10-18T09:42:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/dunlopprimaryschool\/?p=290"},"modified":"2019-11-26T11:11:50","modified_gmt":"2019-11-26T11:11:50","slug":"p5-term-1-targets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/ea\/dunlopprimaryschool\/2019\/10\/18\/p5-term-1-targets\/","title":{"rendered":"P5 Term 1 Targets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Primary 5&#8217;s Term 1 Targets are listed below:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Numeracy<\/p>\n<p>The main areas of focus this term will be:<\/p>\n<p>Place Value<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reading and writing whole numbers up to hundreds of thousands.<\/li>\n<li>Understanding that zero is a placeholder<\/li>\n<li>Children will be able to use a place value grid to aid them in answering multiplication and division calculations by 10 and 100.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fractions, Decimals and Percentages<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Children will be introduced to the decimal point and will learn the link between decimal notation and fractions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Addition and Subtraction<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Different strategies to add and subtract numbers up to 5 digits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Multiplication and Division<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As always, times tables are an integral part of numeracy and there will be continued practice of these to improve fluency and understanding.<\/li>\n<li>Division will be reinforced from previous years and children will learn strategies to divide numbers up to 5 digits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Literacy<\/p>\n<p>Reading<\/p>\n<p>The children will read two novels this term as a whole class group, \u2018There\u2019s a Boy in the Girls\u2019 Bathroom\u2019 by Louis Sachar and \u2018The Eye of the Wolf\u2019 by Daniel Pennac. Closer to Christmas time we will also study the poem \u2019The Night Before Christmas\u2019. Active Literacy reading strategies (Prediction, Metalinguistics, Visualisation, Inference, Main Idea and Summary) will be used to help demonstrate a deeper understanding of the content being read in class.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Writing<\/p>\n<p>This term we will be focussing on narrative writing; with a particular focus on using figures of speech to describe a setting and character.<\/p>\n<p>I will also be introducing the children to persuasive writing, where they will be encouraged to express their own personal thoughts and opinions on specific subjects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Listening and Talking<\/p>\n<p>In November, the class will be asked to prepare a speech on a book of their choice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I.D.L. \/ Science<\/p>\n<p>This term, our topic is The Rainforest. The children will learn about the different layers of the rainforest and some of the animals found in each. We will then move on to the impact of deforestation on wildlife, people, and the surrounding landscape and how we can make an impact for positive change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Health and Wellbeing<\/p>\n<p>This term we will be learning about Substance Misuse and how this can affect our bodies.<\/p>\n<p>In P.E. the focus will be large ball skills and circuits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Primary 5&#8217;s Term 1 Targets are listed below: &nbsp; Numeracy The main areas of focus this term will be: Place Value Reading and writing whole numbers up to hundreds of thousands.
