Developing a deeper understanding\u00a0 of;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Place Value<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">The place of a number determines its value, ie units, tens, hundreds etc<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">Introduction of the decimal point, tenths, hundredths and thousandths<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">Zero is a place holder<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">Rounding <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">Online games to reinforce place value &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.topmarks.co.uk\/maths-games\/7-11-years\/place-value\">https:\/\/www.topmarks.co.uk\/maths-games\/7-11-years\/place-value<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Addition and Subtraction<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">How to add and subtract numbers greater than 4 digits using a variety of strategies, including partitioning (breaking a number into value groups), using a number line and formal column sums<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\">Rounding to estimate an answer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">The children will also develop their problem solving skills by completing tasks which reinforce the general class learning on place value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Literacy<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Reading<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">This term the children will read two novels as a whole class group, Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Margorian and\u00a0 The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. We will continue to use our six reading strategies &#8211; Prediction, Metalinguistics, visualisation, Inference, Main Idea and Summary to help demonstrate a deeper understanding of the story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Media Block<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">After reading our WW2 themed novels, we will be watching the film adaptations. During this period we will look at how the film maker uses different aspect of film, such as camera angles, lighting, music etc to convey understanding to the viewer. A letter will be sent home prior to this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Writing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">The focus for writing will be narrative, looking closely at developing a setting and characterisation. The children will be encouraged to use figures of speech such as simile, metaphor, personification and hyperbole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">We will also be writing newspaper reports and biographies as part of our World War 2 topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Listening and Talking<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">In November the class will be asked to prepare a speech on an influential character from World War 2, this could be a member of their family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Health and Wellbeing<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">This term we will be discussing mental health. Using the Pixar film Inside Out the children will examine the different emotions that we all feel, both during this uncertain time of Covid and as we grow older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">In PE the focus will be on Netball and games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>IDL<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">This term our topic is on the subject of World War 2.
