Primary 7 Termly Targets – Term 2

This term promises to be a busy term for Primary 7. The class will continue to complete their Leadership work alongside Columba 1400 and develop the school garden as we move into spring.

Literacy

Initially we will focus on Scots poetry, with a particular focus on planning and hosting a Burns Breakfast. The children will learn a number of Scots poems, including Tam O’shanter which they will perform as part of the Scots Poetry Competition.

Reading

We are continuing to read Wonder by RJ Palacio. Using the 6 reading strategies allows the children to dig deeper and show their understanding. The main theme of Wonder is kindness and friendship.

Later in the term the children will be reading The Eleventh Orphan by the Scottish author Joan Lingard.

Media Study

As part of our work on literacy the children will interpret the film Zootropolis, by looking at character, camera angles, colour, setting, sound and themes .

Zootropolis looks at different areas of discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes. The children will analyse the different themes and discuss how the roles of different characters move the story forward.  The children will write a critical analysis to demonstrate their understanding.

Data handling – The children will learn to interpret data using the terms mean, mode, median and range. We will also look at the reliability of graphs.

IDL

Initially, as part of our Scottish Fortnight we will be researching the life and work of Robert Burns.

We will then be learning more about the Scottish Parliament, the children will discuss the difference between a democracy and dictatorship and learn about the different roles with the Scottish Parliament. As part of this topic the class will be split into 4 political parties, creating their own manifestos and policies. The topic will conclude with a mock election.

The children will continue their work with Miss Barrett on Rights, Respecting Schools, this will compliment our work on the Scottish Parliament.

Winter Polar Bear Art

To make this lovely polar bear art we used watercolours to make a sunrise effect. We pressed cling film on to the wet watercolours to give the effect on the mountains. We used white poster paint to make the polar bears and we smudged pencil and charcoal to make the polar bears stand out. To finish these lovely polar bears off we adding some glitter to give the polar bears some sparkle .

One Kind Word – Anti Bullying Week 2021

This week, the school and P7 are taking part in Anti Bullying Week and today we made posters on things our classmates think about us and a Wonder portrait of our selfs. They are amazing and look fabulous. We loved writing kind comments about our classmates and felt good about it. The Wonder Poster ties into our reading book, they represent that everyone is important and that everyone is worth the same no matter how they look.

Harvest Collection 2021

Our newly elected Captains and Vice Captains met to plan and organise this year’s Harvest collection, and this year they chose the AYRSHIRE (EAST) FOODBANK (seeded by The Trussell Trust)to be the receiving charity.

AYRSHIRE (EAST) FOODBANK

‘We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That’s why we provide three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to us in crisis. We are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.’

Today our Harvest collection was expertly led by the Vic Captains and after collecting the food items they then had the hard job of packing this ready for the foodbank to collect.

Harvest Collection 2021

The Captains and Vice Captains, extend a huge thank you to our school community for their generosity and kindness.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the Captains and Vice Captains for their citizenship and raising awareness for food poverty.

Kind regards, Mrs Nouillan

Dunlop House System and Captains and Vice Captains

When new pupils arrive at Dunlop Primary, their transition is supported by entry into a caring and supportive environment.

Each new pupil becomes a valued member of a small ‘family unit’ within Dunlop and are allocated a House.   Pupils stay within their house until they leave in P7, additionally we place siblings together within a house.

At Dunlop Primary, we have three house: Clerkland,  Glazert and Lugton.

Our house are named after local places and each house is represented by a different colour, we encourage pupils to wear their house colours on days throughout the year.

Clerkalnd = Blue
Glazert = Yellow
Lugton = Red

P7 House Captains and P6 Vice Captains

At the beginning of the school year, a P7 is elected House Captain and takes on the responsibility for the leadership and organisation of their house for the forthcoming year and they are supported by a P6 Vice Captain. The House Captains and Vice Captains work tirelessly to ensure their house members are working together to earn House Points through living and demonstrating our School Values of being Happy, Kind, Honest and Respectful.

House points are also awarded at House Events, this will be when we are allowed to mix bubbles!

At the end of the year, house points are added together and the house with the most points wins the overall house competition and they lift the much coveted House Cup.  This is a prestigious moment for the Captain and Vice Captain and they are cheered along by a delighted house!

Over the last two weeks, House Captain and Vice Captain election fever hit Dunlop Primary and I want to thank again all our prospective P7 and P6 candidates for showing commitment to their house and delivering wonderful election speeches!  Both Mrs Kelly and myself were delighted to see so many children keen to take on leadership roles with in our school.

After voting, I am pleased to announce the following candidates were elected by their peers:

Clerkland Captain
Clerkland Vice Captain
Glazert Captain
Glazert Vice Captain
Lugton Captain
Lugton Vice Captain

As always, I am looking forward to working alongside the Captains and Vice Captains.

With warmest regards, Mrs Nouillan
