Primary 6 Bar Modelling

For the last two weeks Primary 6 have been learning how to use the bar modelling strategy in maths. The main aim of a bar model is to be a pictorial representation of the underlying structure of a maths problem.

Bar modelling is an early introduction to algebra and hopefully as the children become more familiar with this strategy so will their confidence when tackling more complex maths problems.

Initially we are exploring how to use this strategy as  a whole group in preparation for Barvember. Barvember has been created by White Rose Maths, where daily bar modelling problems are released throughout the month of November.

I have attached a copy of some of the problems we have been tackling in class. As you can see the problems become progressively harder. My aim is for the children to independently tackle problem 4, however this will take time as they familiarise themselves with this way of working.

John Muir Award

This session Primary 6 and 7 are going to be working towards their John  Muir award. This award asks us to discover a wild place within our local environment and explore all it has to offer. If you would like to know more about this please follow the link https://www.johnmuirtrust.org/john-muir-award

In Dunlop we are incredibly fortunate that we have so many beautiful spots on our doorstep for us all to discover.

On Wednesday both classes ventured down to the Millennium Woods. Whilst we were there the children were asked to sketch a particular viewpoint, which when back in the class they would paint in watercolours. Their second task was to write down a variety of descriptions, using their senses. These descriptions will be used to create a piece of creative writing.

As we work towards the award the children will be given the opportunity to suggest ideas and we are really looking forward to hearing what they come up with.

Primary 1 – Term 1 Targets 20/21

Hi everyone,

I am pleased to report that all of the children have settled very well and are enjoying learning in Primary 1.  It is great to see how confidently they already move around the classroom, playground and park and interact with each other, myself, their buddy and other teaching staff.

Term 1 planning is as follows:

Numeracy & Mathematics

  • estimate amounts and check by counting
  • use one-to-one correspondence when counting
  • match and order numbers to 10 and beyond
  • count forwards and back to 20
  • find the number before/after/ between
  • add on one, then 2
  • share/use appropriate language to describe halves
  • sequence days of the week/months of the year
  • copy, continue and create patterns
  • recognise/sort/match 2D then 3D shapes
  • create a pictogram using relevant information.

The children also complete mental maths, Numicon and Number Talks activities each day which help them understand mathematical ideas and relationships essential for successful reasoning and problem-solving.

Literacy & Modern Language

Spelling words will continue to be sent home every three weeks, with week 3 being consolidation of sounds and spelling words covered so far.

To date we have explored a, t, s, i, p, n, r & m.  We will continue with d, e, c, k, g, l, f, o, b, u, h, w, j & v – 2 sounds per week (plus consolidation) until Christmas holidays.

We are also exploring:

  • rhyme
  • syllables
  • blending
  • using reading strategies
  • prediction/main points/retelling/sequencing stories
  • capital letters & full stops in sentences
  • name writing.

French

We will be using the Camembear resource to explore greetings and colours.

Health & Wellbeing

P.E.

The children are enjoying the Daily Mile.  They are participating in  Games and practicing large ball skills as well as completing Cosmic Yoga and Dance activities and through these activities have an awareness that being active is a healthy way to be.

Health

We are developing positive relationships, co-operation, turn taking, tidying up, taking care of resources and  showing an awareness of our school Values within the daily routine of the class.

We will be exploring:

  •  feelings, fairness, caring, sharing, friendships, equality and love within Mental Wellbeing
  • hand washing and tooth brushing as part of our daily routine to maintain wellbeing and health
  • internet safety.

Social Studies and Science

The children will be finding out about People in the Past through The Great Fire of London.  We will explore how people lived in the past and how their lives were different to ours.  We  will also look at local shops and services in comparison.

Our Science topics this term are Rain, Wind & Snow and Vibrations.

The children will:

  • describe and record the weather, its effects and how it makes them feel
  • use their findings to discuss and explore the seasons
  • investigate how water changes from one form to another
  • create instruments to explore sounds
  • explore sound vibrations of various pitches.

Expressive Arts

Our art lessons will be topic-related painting, drawing and collage.  We will also investigate colour mixing and observe  our local environment to record ideas, thoughts and feelings.

We will practice seasonal songs in class and use our instruments to keep a beat or practice a rhythm.

Technologies

The children participate in Education City and Busy Things  on the classroom computers and are also learning to:

  • start up and shut down the computer
  • use the mouse
  • select and click on an icon
  • drag and drop
  • use the space bar, shift key and delete button
  • type their name.

Within technologies the children are using the class camera to record tasks and will develop practical skills using tools to solve problems within topic work.

Primary 6 Term 1 Targets

Numeracy and Maths

This term the focus our numeracy focus will be on place value of numbers to a million and addition and subtraction. Developing a deeper understanding  of;

Place Value

  • The place of a number determines its value, ie units, tens, hundreds etc
  • Introduction of the decimal point, tenths, hundredths and thousandths
  • Zero is a place holder
  • Rounding
  • Multiplying and dividing by 10, 100

Online games to reinforce place value – https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/place-value

Addition and Subtraction

  • How to add and subtract numbers greater than 4 digits using a variety of strategies, including partitioning (breaking a number into value groups), using a number line and formal column sums
  • Rounding to estimate an answer

The children will also develop their problem solving skills by completing tasks which reinforce the general class learning on place value.

Literacy

Reading

This term the children will read two novels as a whole class group, Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Margorian and  The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne. We will continue to use our six reading strategies – Prediction, Metalinguistics, visualisation, Inference, Main Idea and Summary to help demonstrate a deeper understanding of the story.

Media Block

After reading our WW2 themed novels, we will be watching the film adaptations. During this period we will look at how the film maker uses different aspect of film, such as camera angles, lighting, music etc to convey understanding to the viewer. A letter will be sent home prior to this.

Writing

The focus for writing will be narrative, looking closely at developing a setting and characterisation. The children will be encouraged to use figures of speech such as simile, metaphor, personification and hyperbole.

We will also be writing newspaper reports and biographies as part of our World War 2 topic.

Listening and Talking

In November the class will be asked to prepare a speech on an influential character from World War 2, this could be a member of their family.

Health and Wellbeing

This term we will be discussing mental health. Using the Pixar film Inside Out the children will examine the different emotions that we all feel, both during this uncertain time of Covid and as we grow older.

In PE the focus will be on Netball and games.

IDL

This term our topic is on the subject of World War 2. We will look at war on the home front, the Blitz, evacuation, rationing etc. After the October holidays we will look at war in Germany, with a focus on the Holocaust.

Primary 6 Wind Power

As part of our climate change topic primary 6 have been learning about different types of renewable energy. We have been completing different STEAM challenges and our last one was to build a simple wind turbine. The children had to work in groups and were given different resources, depending on the country they represented.

As you can see from the videos below, some of the turbines were more successful than others.
