Primary 5 – Term 3 Learning Targets

Numeracy

The main areas of focus this term will be:

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

  • Children will use their knowledge of factors to find the simplest form of a fraction
  • Ordering fractions with different denominators and understanding equivalences
  • Making the initial links between fractions and decimals, and then decimals and percentages

Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division

  • Throughout this term, Primary 5 will continue to work on the above skills on a weekly basis.
  • We will be multiplying and dividing numbers of up to 4 digits by a single number,
  • We will be learning different strategies to add and subtract numbers up to 5 digits.
  • Times tables are an integral part of numeracy at all levels, so these will be continued on a weekly basis. I would encourage the children to be working on these at home as much as possible.

There are some useful games on the following website for practising multiplication tables: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/times-tables

Sumdog is also a useful resource which is accessible from home.

Literacy

Reading

The children have started reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’ by J.K. Rowling this term. Active Literacy reading strategies (Prediction, Metalinguistics, Visualisation, Inference, Main Idea and Summary) will be used to help demonstrate a deeper understanding of the content being read in class.

Following this, we will be completing a block on non-fiction text

Writing

This term we will be focussing on recount writing. This will include diary entries and newspaper report writing linked to our IDL topic, novel and current affairs.

I.D.L.

This term, our topic is The Romans. Some of the areas the children will be learning about are: the rise of the Roman Empire, Roman Numerals, different weapons used during battle and some historical figures who lived during the rule of the Roman Empire, e.g. Boudicca, Julius Caesar.

Health and Wellbeing

This term we will be focusing on Growth Mindset and how changing the way you think and speak about things can change the way you feel about them.

There will also be a short block on sexual health, more information on what the children will be learning can be found in the ‘Useful Links’ section of the blog.

The children will also be learning about the human body with Mrs Fullard, focusing on the cardiovascular system, the respiratory system and vision.

In P.E., the focus will be Short Tennis skills.

Primary 5 – Term 1 Targets

Numeracy

The main areas of focus this term will be:

Multiplication

  • We will be learning the formal method for multiplying 2 and 3 digit numbers
  • Time tables, as always, will be a huge focus. The 7 has already been introduced with the 9 following soon after. All other tables will be constantly revised throughout the term.

Data Handling

  • Children will be using Microsoft Forms to create questionnaires for their classmates to answer.
  • This data will be used to create various types of graphs on Microsoft Excel
  • Children will also get the opportunity to interpret data from graphs and comment on any trends.

Addition and Subtraction

  • Different strategies to add and subtract numbers up to 4 digits.

Rounding and Estimating

  • We will be learning how to round numbers to the nearest 1000 (as well as revising rounding to the nearest 10 and 100).

Money

  • Children will be given a budget of £30 and asked to plan and budget a day out with a friend, presenting their findings on a poster.
  • We will discuss the terms profit and loss, as well as the differences between debit and credit cards.

Measure

  • A block of learning has already been completed on measuring in mm, cm and m.
  • We have also learned how to calculate area using the formula area = length x breadth, as well as calculating perimeters.

Sumdog diagnostics are still being completed and as soon as these are complete, I will be setting optional Sumdog homework which will focus on times tables.

Literacy

Reading

The children will read two novels this term as a whole class group, ‘There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom’ by Louis Sachar and ‘The Eye of the Wolf’ by Daniel Pannac. Active Literacy reading strategies (Prediction, Metalinguistics, Visualisation, Inference, Main Idea and Summary) will be used to help demonstrate a deeper understanding of the content being read in class.

Writing

This term we will be focussing on imaginative writing, the children will be learning how to use adverbs, similes and metaphors to describe characters and settings.

We will also be looking at persuasive writing, which we will link into our IDL topic, The Rainforest.

Primary 5 Minecraft

Primary 5 have been learning about deforestation and sustainability. They were given a Minecraft challenge to create a sustainable farmhouse that would have little long-term environmental impact.

The children came up with some amazing ideas such as solar panels, windmills and crop fields, to name a few! I’m still so impressed with how creative the children are and look forward to planning the next Minecraft challenge!
