Glasgow Central (pm)

The children visited Glasgow Central today, they spent time looking at the enormous Christmas tree and snowflakes at the station. We had great fun looking around the different shops, talking about the magazines, cards and we even saw a unicorn.  One of the children recalled a previous visit to the station over a year before, commenting “The Giants chair has gone.” They had snack in the station and collected some leaflets to read on the train, some fantastic discussions about zoo animals and dinosaurs on our journey home.

Mini Forest Week 5

This week was a mild week for our  Outdoor Learning. The children splashed in  the puddles as we crossed the playground to the Mini Forest. “Will the icy mud be there?” one of the children asked. The mud was slippery and the children had fun wobbling going down the path. Their favourite game of Pirates with sticks was played. Lots of bouncing on the low branch. We brought Daffodil bulbs to plant around the grass. The children had a chat about the bulbs ..telling us about the water they needed to grow. Then with a little help digging with their trowels they made little holes and planted their bulbs. We are hopeful in the Spring we will see them as we do our park walk. The children showed great interest in them and estimated when they might flower…fingers crossed they survive the Winter.

Primary 1 Transition Session 2

The children continued to enjoy the transition to Primary 1, working with their P6 Buddies exploring a  different range of numeracy activities. The children worked together and individually to build towers and buildings with the wooden blocks, follow the sequence of colour and size when working with the elephants. They explored and completing a range of jigsaws, used the mouse to confidently control the computer programmes and used the large dice to play a game on the number tiles.

Week 4 Mini Forest

This week was a frosty cold start to our Mini Forest adventure. The children found icy mud and started to chip away at it with sticks. It was hard work but it kept them warm. They found their sticks and happily continued their pirate games.  They found an icy puddle and broke it ,picking up bits of ice and looking into them.” Bubbles and dirty bits” are in there they said. The moon and sun were both visible today prompting a discussion on” Why are they both out?” Lots of leaves under their feet started a leaf throwing game that gained them points for the winner. Snack today was welcome as we all were hungry after a great morning of outdoor learning.

Primary 1 Transition

The children spent this afternoon in Primary 1, the morning children’s buddies helped all of the children  explore the different numeracy resources available. The children enjoyed meeting MS Crawford and spending time with their peers. All of the children eagerly engaged with the numeracy challenges showing their understanding of number, pattern and quantity. Well done to all of the children.

Mini Forest week 3

Today we started our adventure  on a blustery day.  The children ran off to play pirates again which they had enjoyed last week. They found sticks for their swords and made shelters in the trees. We had a few showers and a few tried to catch the rain in their mouths. We had an enormous muddy area to stamp and get stuck in. The children ran races found their favourite branch to bounce on calling it a broomstick. We also had our HNC student with us who started  today. Miss McEwan  will be with us each week for Outdoor Learning. We had our snack back in the nursery to help us get warmed up . The children did extremely well today in quite wet and windy weather.     Mrs Orr

Colour Walk (pm)

The afternoon children went on a colour walk today, they had great fun investigating the local environment looking for all the colours to match their colour swatches. The children were extremely observant as we added in a tricky blue colour to find, they found it on coats, hoods of jackets, a backpack, a wheel barrow, fences and garden toys. The children discussed the different shades of each colour as they found items that matched. Well done.

Fruit (Gruffalo) Crumble

Two of our children helped to make fruit crumble for snack this morning. One of the children renaming it ‘Gruffalo Crumble’ the children took great pride in measuring the ingredients using the scales and checking they had the correct numbers on the display screen. “Is that 100.” and commenting “That’s hard to do when your only little isn’t it.” as one of the children scooped the vegetable spread from the tub. They had great fun using their hands to mix the flour and spread together before adding “The shiny thing.” (sugar) into the mix, they chose which fruit they wanted and scooped the crumble topping over. The children and staff enjoyed the crumble with a little natural yogurt-delicious.

Colour Walk (am)

Today the children incorporated a Colour Walk into their morning walk. Each child had a colour swatch that they took on the walk using their observation and investigation skills to find the colours in their local environment. The children used the iPad to document their learning.
