22/05/2018
We had a busy day today!
During language, we were learning all about similes and metaphors! We used blether stations and added a metaphor or a simile to each sentence. We came up with some really good ones too!
“Katy screamed as loud as a dinosaur!”
“The Mouse was a cheetah when it caught the mouse!”

For our Rights Respecting Schools’ homework, we were asked to make a family tree. Today we showed these to the class! Some managed to get as far as their great, great, great grandparents!

Finally, we had a go at a STEM challenge! We have been learning about the human body and the function of the skeleton so our challenge was to create a structure that held up a tennis ball (which represented a head), out of paper!

All of the designs worked as well!

We found out that things we expected to dissolve in cold water didn’t! Next week we are going to test whether the temperature of the water will affect how something dissolves.

04/05/2018
We have been learning about the different types of angles there are. Today we went outside to find angles in the environment! We found lots of right angles on the slabs and the climbing frame makes an acute angle! We drew all the angles we found in our jotters.

Over the last two weeks, we have been designing helicopter prototypes using paper, tape, straws and lolly pop sticks. Our goal was to create a helicopter that travelled the furthest and stayed in the air the longest. We made our designs and tested them. We then made any adjustments that were needed. When we were happy, Miss Sloan tried them all out and we measured the distance it travelled and timed it using stopwatches. The winning group were The Skulled Footballers!
This sounds like a fun activity. (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

01/05/2018
Today was our health and wellbeing theme day!
We talked a lot about our emotions and how people can affect how we feel. We had to cut out comments and then group them either under positive/negative/neutral based on how they made us feel. A lot of us disagreed! We learned, however, that the way you say something can impact the way that person feels!

We also talked about what made us feel happy and what made us feel stressed. We wrote our answers down on a post-it note without our names. Miss Sloan then talked about them and we discussed what we can do if we feel stressed.

Our right of the month for April is number 29 which focuses on looking after the environment. This tied in to Earth day which was on Sunday. We had a debate which focused on reasons to look after the environment vs reasons to not look after the environment. After a spirited debate, it was clear that “Look after the Environment” won!
We can help protect the environment by switching lights off when not needed, not leaving the tv/PS4/X-Box on standby and trying to recycle. The government is trying to use renewable energy so that we don’t have to burn fossil fuels.
It is important that we all play our part! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

I heard you had a fantastic time and gave a very good account of yourselves. Thank you! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

07/03/2018
We have been reading “The Butterfly Lion” by Michael Morpurgo. In relation to the theme, our art activity was to use symmetry to draw the other half of a lion’s head. Today we created the African backgrounds to which we will stick our lion heads onto.
The lions’ heads look wonderfully realistic! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

Back in January, we had people from Live-and-Learn come in to tell us all about growth mindset and to work with the upper primary classes. Primary 5 ended up missing their slot as that was the first snow day. Jen returned today, however and taught us lots about having a growth mindset!
“It is better to just have a go!” – Michaela
“If you think you can’t do it – just add yet!” – Euan M and Aaron
“F.A.I.L stands for first attempt in learning” – Daryl and Max

You all look fantastic! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

27/02/2018
Today we were learning about how different chemicals mix with each other and created lava lamps! We started off by measuring out oil and water and putting them together. They don’t mix together and oil floats on top of water as it is less dense. We then added food colouring. Finally we dropped in soluable aspirin tablets which dissolve and react to produce bubble of Carbon Dioxide. These show up as colourful blobs in the oil! It was so fun and we loved doing it!
This is really interesting, P5! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

26/02/2018
We have been practising our show retelling the Easter story. We are working really hard and look forward to performing it in the Church on the 29th March!

Today we had visitors from the SSPCA in to teach us all about what their job is and why it is important to look after animals. We watched a couple of really interesting videos and then had a go looking at different farm equipment and trying to decide what we thought it was used for. We learned lots about farm animals as well: for example did you know a pig has the same IQ as a 4 year old! It was really interesting and we learned all about what to do if we are taking our dogs a walk in the country!
Wow! I did not know that about pigs! You learn something new every day! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

20/02/2018
We have been learning Spanish from Mar every Tuesday! We have learned lots of new vocabulary such as describing what a person looks like to different foods! We love having her in and have really enjoyed learning a new language!

30/01/2018
Every week we learn new spelling words during two half hour sessions. On a Monday we use them for written activites and on a Tuesday we practise spelling them using active activities. As we are a dyslexia friendly school, we are trying to use different ways to learn spelling so we can be inclusive to everyone as not everyone learns the same. Miss Sloan set up three stations; shaving foam, finger paints and play-dough and we had to use them to spell our words. We absolutely loved it and were so engaged throughout!

26/01/2018

Today was our Scottish Celebration and Carly was chosen to recite the poem to the full school.

Well done to all of you! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)
23/01/2018
We have been reading another Michael Morpurgo book called “The Butterfly Lion”. We have been learning different reading strategies to help develop our understanding. Today’s strategy was Visualisation. We read chapter 3 and picked out all the words and phrases that described how the compound looked. We did this using a mind map and then drew the picture that came into our head when we looked at all the descriptions.

We have also been discussing adverts and how they try to persuade audiences to buy that product. We split into groups and had to come up with a healthy product, a short scene and a short song of some kind that would stick people’s heads. Here are a couple of the adverts we came up with (sorry we cannot upload them all!):

From everyone in primary 5, we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and new year.

21/12/2017
Today we finished off our igloos! Before we went to the panto yesterday, we burst the balloons and stuck the round section of the igloo down onto cardboard. We then took a piece of a kitchen roll tube and stuck that down to make the entrance. This morning we painted them white to look like snow. They look really cool and we look forward to taking them home tomorrow.

19/12/2017
Today we completed another STEM Christmas challenge! Our challenge was to create a giant snowman from paper cups and crepe paper/card for the hat/eyes/nose. We worked well in our teams and had great fun making it! The main challenge was coming up with ideas on how to construct the snowman as we only had the basic materials plus a stapler. In the end we decided to make a ring of cups and build up each layer; stapling as we went. We think the final product is amazing! Miss Sloan loves it as well!

18/12/2017
Today we were making paper-mache igloos! We had to blow up a balloon and cover half of it with newspaper. It is really sticky and messy (but also fun to peel the glue off your fingers after it has dried!). Tomorrow we are going to paint them white and use a piece off of the kitchen roll tube to create the entrance for the igloo.

15/12/2017
Our article of the month is number 29 which tells us about how our education should include learning how to protect the environment. This month was also World Soil Day. We discussed why we should protect the environment and even suggested ways on how we could do this. We then made a “Happy Soil Day” card!

We have been learning all about alcohol and the dangers it has on the body and mind. We found out that it can impair your judgement and be dangerous if people drive while under the influence. Miss Sloan let us try on beer goggles andhad to carry out different tasks while wearing them. First we had to walk in a straight line and see how we could cope with that. They felt really weird and we struggled to see clearly where we were going! After that we had to throw plastic balls at a mat. The balls had sticky tape on them which would stick to the mat. Some of our aims were terribe while wearing the glasses! Sometimes we even threw them to the side! This showed us how our perception of distance and where things are can be affected by alcohol. We finished up by discussing the risks you take if you drive while under the influence of alcohol. It really is dangerous and we definetly won’t do it when we are older!
11/12/2017
We have been joining up our PE times with P6 and P7 to practice our social dancing. So far, we have really enjoyed ourselves and have became very skilled at these dances. We cannot wait to do them all at our Christmas Party next Monday! Miss Cuthbert in primary 7 has even found current songs that we can dance to, which makes it even more fun!

6/12/2017
We have been learning about alcohol and today we discussed the different strengths of alcohol and what a “unit” is. Miss Sloan gave us 12 different alcoholic drinks and we have to arrange ourselves from the strongest to the weakest (according to alcohol by volume (abv)).
This is what we thought…
Order we decided (from strongest to weakest);
Rum, Vodka, Guiness, Whisky, Champagne, Beer, Blue Wicked, White Wine, Gin, Red Wine, Smirnoff Ice and Cocktails.

However, the actual order is;
Cocktails, Rum, Vodka/Whisky, Gin, Red Wine, Champagne, White Wine, Smirnoff Ice, Guiness, Blue Wicked, Beer.

5/12/2017
Today we presented our talks to the class. Miss Sloan had asked us to research and prepare a talk about an Antarctic animal. Our success criteria was to have a clear voice and maintain eye-contact with our audience. We had a variety of animals researched; from penguins to whales! We included facts such as the size of the animal, what they eat, how they got their name as well as other things. We tried really hard and Miss Sloan was impressed with how well we did.

It is great to see you all speaking so confidently to the whole class. Well done! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

28/11/2017
Today we were given a STEM challenge! We had to work as a team to create a spaghetti bridge! Our goal was to make a bridge that could hold the most weight. Many different problems occurred and we had to come up with creative ways on how to solve the problem. One group ran out of elastic bands so had to think about what other materials were available to us in order to fix the issue. Sadly we ran out of time to finish and test them but Miss Sloan will give us more time tomorrow.
We really love working as part of a team as we can get a range of different ideas.

We have reached 1000 dojo points as a class so our chosen reward was an outdoor afternoon! It was so fun! We were given the challenge in groups to create an animal habitat from the environment around us. We weren’t allowed to pull anything from the trees or up from the ground, we could only use what had already fallen down or been lifted up. We worked really well in our teams and the habitats we made were so good that Miss Sloan couldn’t choose a winner! We all got 5 dojo points for working hard in our teams. Our favourite part was getting our hands dirty and building the habitats.
What a great afternoon’s work. Well done P5! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

13/11/2017
This week is Anti-Bullying week and we have been talking about what bullying is. Our articles of the month are 19 and 39 which have been chosen to coincide with Anti-Bullying week and Universal Children’s Day. Today we “Speed-friended” where we were given two minutes to talk to someone we don’t talk to that much. We asked different questions to get to know a bit more about them.

Today we had Ross in taking the girls for PE! We don’t normally do PE on a Friday but he said there is a Scotland-wide initiative to tackle girls not enjoying or taking part in PE/sport. While the girls did this, the boys went to primary 4 and were reading non-fiction books. Everyone really enjoyed themselves! Miss Sloan went with the girls and was helping to keep score. The girls were split into groups and had the opportunity to run, shoot goals (football), score baskets (basketball) and practice their passing skills. Group number 4 managed to win, with a lead of 9 points!

31/10/2017
Today we were discussing static electricity! It was really interesting and we had to blow up balloons and see if we could create enough static electricity to make them stick to the walls! We made static by rubbing the balloons against our hair or clothes. Did you know static electricity is cause by friction between two things?!
Since it is Halloween, we also drew ghost faces on them to make them spooky!

Article 24
“You have the right to the best health care possible, safe water to drink, nutritious food, a clean and safe environment, and information to help you stay well”
Article 27
“You have the right to food, clothing, a safe place to live and to have your basic needs met. You should not be disadvantaged so that you can’t do many of the things other kids can do”
Miss Sloan told us that World Food Day was in October and so we started talking about the different types of food people eat around the world. We even got to try some as well! Some tasted great but some definitely didn’t!
“I actually really liked Marzipan!” – Brogan
“I tried a bit of Feta Cheese. It tasted like butter as first but then started to taste horrible!” – Katie

Today we finished our Viking helmets and axes! They are so cool!
Scary! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

11/10/2017
We have been learning all about the Vikings and we have been making Viking helmets and axes! We have also learned lots of facts about their weapons and clothes. Did you know that Viking helmets didn’t actually have horns? They only had horns for ceremonies not for fighting! Also did you know their main choice of weapon was an axe? They only were given swords if they did well in battle!
We use cardboard to make the helmets and cardboard from boxes to make the axes! It is so much fun but really messy so we had to wear painting tops! When everyone has finished, we will post a picture of everyone wearing them!

10/10/2017
Today we were presenting our powerpoints that we made using our research about the Vikings. We had to work together to present and make sure everyone had a turn to speak. We really liked showing off our work and getting asked lots of questions! Miss Sloan seemed to be really pleased with our work as well!

Today was “No Pens!” day in school which meant we weren’t to use any writing tools at all! This was because we wanted to focus on the things people with dyslexia were good, such as learning through doing! We did lots of fun active activities in maths, French and topic!

03/10/2017
We have been learning all about the Vikings and have been really enjoying it! Miss Sloan asked us to research different things about the Vikings and make a powerpoint that we will be presenting to the rest of the class! Some people have been looking into Viking clothing while others at famous Vikings! We have even talked about how some websites aren’t the best to use because anyone can post on them! Today in French, we have been learning new greetings! The pupils learned how to tell me they were hot, cold, thirsty and hungry! We set up carousel activities for pupils to practise new vocabulary and remind them of previously learned vocabulary. They really enjoyed it and I have had pupils coming up to me and speaking to me in French so that they can have a drink or to open the windows! Below are some pictures of the pupils taking part in the different activities.

26/09/2017
We are fast approaching the Harvest Festival service at the church and the pupils have been hard at work learning the songs. This year the pupils are singing;
- Harvest Samba
- Colours of Day
- When I Needed a Neighbour
- Jambalaya
They really enjoy singing these songs and have even nearly mastered the two part in split in Harvest Samba! I split the boys and girls into separate sides to make it easier to sing their section.

25/09/2017
Up until now the pupils have had three assemblies a week. We have now changed this so that we have one on a Friday and replaced the other two by having an Activity afternoon on a Monday. There are four different activities and the pupils take turns at each activity. The four activities are:
- STEM
- Music and Movement
- Lets Think!
- Homework/Free Reading
The whole school has been divided up into four groups and will attend 2 activities a week. For block 1, primary 5 will be attending Let’s Think! and Homework/Free Reading and will attend these for 7 weeks before swapping to the other activities.
22/09/2017
Our Dojo winner is Ruby and our star pupil is Rhianna! Well Done!

12/09/2017
Today we chose our DFS committee members. They are:
Rhianna and Aaron!

The primary 5 have also been learning all about the Vikings and have more specifically been looking into longships and how they stay afloat in the water! On Friday we discussed density and how it affects whether an object sinks or floats. This led on to today where each group was tasked to make their own ship which would float in water and hold weight! the team that held the most weight without sinking would win a dojo point each.
The winning team was…….The Colourful Dragons (Daryl, Katie B, Ellen and Michaela)

Their boat held a whopping 210g!!!
Here is a picture of all the great boats each team made.

Fantastic work P5!
07/09/2017

We have been discussing different relationships in primary 5 and what qualities people in these relationships would have. The class “applied for jobs” and then we held mock interviews where the pupils had to explain why they would be good at that job, making sure to include details about their personal qualities. The jobs they applied for were: Parent, Sibling, Friend and Teammate.

These are some photos of the mock interviews.
The pupils “hired” were:
Parent – Logan
Friend – Katie
Sibling – Grace
Teammate – Haseeb

All the children were fantastic and should be pleased with how hard they worked!

Primary 5 have started their new topic on the vikings! The class researched facts abouts the vikings and then created an informative poster which was eye-catching!
What an exciting topic! I look forward to hearing what you’ve learned! (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

They are all looking forward to learning more about who the vikings were and how they lived!

Primary 5 have been learning all about UNCRC and what rights they have as children. The class enjoyed discussing this and came up with some fantastic ideas! They chose articles which are the most relevant to their lives and then came up with what their responsibilities were as well as an adult’s responsibility! We created our class charter using the ideas we came up with!

We also chose our favourite article and created a quilt based on what we thought that would look like!
