It was an ECO themed assembly this week!  We celebrated World Environment Day on Wednesday by learning all about climate change, pollution, endangered animals and deforestation.  We participated in a team brainstorming session to record the different things we can do at home and school to look after the planet!  Great effort and ideas!!!!

We really had wildlife biodiversity in the school today when a swallow flew in.

Thankfully it was unharmed.

He was very reluctant to go out again, he was there all day!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

The Gardening Club have been busy again.   Mainholm Nurseries supplied us with beautiful bedding plants which we used to fill our tyres and beds.  The beds at the bottom have the pupil plants grown from seed.  The bed on the left as you approach the school has wild seed in it too whilst the bed on the right is supplemented with commercial bedding plants.  We will see what they look like in time.  The Wild Flower Meadow is now starting to grow, we look forward to seeing it in full bloom.

Gardening club looks like fun, Mrs Wilson!  (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

This was Biodiversity Day and as part of our assembly we gathered as wide a range of natural colours from the school grounds as we could.  The results were amazing.  We hope that our Wild Flower Meadow will really increase the biodiversity of our grounds in time.

The pictures are stunning and can be seen in our meeting room.   (From Mrs O’Driscoll)

The Eco Committee will be meeting on Friday, during assembly, to discuss how classes are using class Dojo points to record water and fruit!  We will be conducting class surveys next week to find out which classes are bringing the healthiest snacks and to make sure everyone is well hydrated with water in this HOT weather!  We will keep you updated with our findings!

Our school will be taking part in the East Ayrshire Walk to School Week, which runs from Monday 15th May until Friday 19th May 2017. A daily walking theme has been created to encourage children to walk.  Walking to school cuts down on car use and help the environment, plus it is fun!

Monday – Walk to School wearing a fun hat (school uniform)

Tuesday – Walk to School with happy shoes (school uniform)

Wednesday – Walk to School wearing bright clothes

(can be non-uniform but not fancy dress, nightwear/onesies or football clothes)

Thursday – Walk to School with crazy hair (school uniform)

Friday- Walk to School wearing odd socks (school uniform)

Schools all over East Ayrshire are taking part in this event. Let’s all enjoy walking to school.

This week the Gardening Club were hard at work getting the beds and tyres ready for bedding plants.  We have been growing plants from seed in the classes since February.

The school grounds are looking great in the sun just now.  The trees are full of blossom and the dandelions have given way to tulips.  We have planted snowdrops and bluebells in the grounds so next Spring should have even more colour, especially when our wild flower meadow reaches maturity.

Our Gardening Club has started back up so we will refill the tyres and beds with plants as the early Spring flowers die off.

We have started work on the wild flower meadow.  This was hard work and many thanks go to the adults that helped along with the pupils.

(Credit to Mr Kerr who managed to do most of the heavy work.)

The planting of the seeds will be completed by the Gardening Club next week.

The effect will take a couple of years to fully see but hopefully it will show a magnificent range of colours and massively increase the biodiversity of our grounds.   Naturally this gives a great resource for outdoor learning.
