Outdoor Learning

Primary 4/5 enjoyed representing simple fractions outside with natural resources. This activity allowed us to demonstrate our understanding of numerator and denominator that we had been learning in class.

Primary 2/3 have been investigating weight.  We used balancing scales to estimate and measure ‘what weighs the same as an apple?’  The children had to use crayons, dominoes, cubes and paint brushes to balance the scales equally.  The children have been increasing their vocabulary and were able to discuss what is heavier, lighter, equal and balanced.  They also were able to identify that our answers were not the same becuase the apples have diffreent qualities and some are heavier than others.  Well done primary 2/3!

Measuring

Primary 2/3 were admiring new shoes in a conversation when we decided to measure our feet.  Turns out we have sizes ranging from a small 8 all the way up to a big 3!  The children had fun trying to measure their feet against others people’s shoes.  We have made a line in order of our shoe size.

Smartie Fractions!

P6/7 have been learning all about fractions. We have been experimenting with different types of fractions and finding fractions of quantities. Last week we used smarties to investigate non-unit fractions. We counted the number of smarties we had altogether and made this our denominator, then we counted how many of each colour we had for the numerator.  This helped us to work out what fraction of each colour we had in our tubes. Some of us then challenged ourselves to simplify, order and compare these fractions. The children enjoyed the activity- especially eating their smarties at the end!
