Primary 4/5 Institute Visit

Primary 4/5 visited the institute today and enjoyed making homemade shortbread.  This links in great with our Scottish topic on Scotland’s food and farming.

Everyone had a fantastic time and couldn’t believe how delicious their shortbread tasted 🙂

Scots Verse Celebrations

Family and friends are invited to join us on Friday 31 January at 1.45 p.m. in the school for our Scots Verse Celebrations.

The winners of our Scots Verse Recital class competitions will be announced, and you will be treated to a rendition of their poem. The whole school will be singing Scots songs, and we look forward to welcoming you to a “richt guid” celebration.

I am delighted to provide you with the latest report from Education Scotland and East Ayrshire Council for Catrine PS and ECC.  It states that both establishments are now officially signed off from the inspection process.  Staff at both Catrine PS and ECC are very pleased with the report, and we are proud to be sharing it with you.

Inclusion Committee

Yesterday, the Inclusion committee met for the second committee day. We looked at growth mindset and talked about the power of yet. The committee group decided that this was so important that we had to tell the whole school about it.

We made posters to tell everyone about growth mindset and have prepared a small presentation for home circles that we can’t wait for you all to hear.

We decided to make a tree to represent Catrine’s growth mindset. On this tree every pupil will have a goal that they cannot do…. YET! We look forward to seeing everyone’s goals and watching everyone’s journey.

The inclusion committee have lots of exciting ideas up our sleeves and can’t wait to share them with you all in the near future!

Outdoor Learning

Today Primary 4/5 took their learning outside. They worked together to create a bar graph with an x and y axis and a scale showing off all their learning from information handling.

They then considered all the ways that they could sort themselves to create these amazing human bar graphs.

We think these human bar graphs looks fantastic and found this a fun way to show off our learning in information handling.


This month in our DYW committee group we were learning lots of science skills. We learned about wiring a circuit to

light a bulb and then we added a switch.  We experimented with different materials to see which ones were insulators and which were conductors. This means which materials let electricity flow through them and which ones stop it.

After break we learned about forces and motion. We had a Rocket Challenge to see who could design and build a rocket that could cut through the air.  The winning rocket was ‘Pencil’. It was like a pencil with a sharp top. It moved the furthest and quickest.

We had an excellent time working together.

Digital Learning Committee

Digital learning internet safety 2020

Today in the digital learning committee  we were learning how to email posters to Miss Burleigh on glow. We were making posters for internet safety and we were also making a PowerPoint and a quiz to teach the rest of the school about internet safety. We watched a video about a boy and a girl playing a game on the internet. They were animal characters and a person who was pretending to be someone else was asking the boy and girl for personal information. The little boy thought that the person was taking him to the treasure but he was taking them to danger.

Intergenerational Group Walk Around Catrine

Our committee groups meet again tomorrow morning and pupils who are part of the above group will be going a walk around Catrine.  If your child is in this group please ensure  that they are wearing a suitable jacket and footwear.  No permission form is needed as this walk is covered by the Walk Around Catrine form completed at the beginning of the year.

P3/4 Data Handling

We have been looking at different ways we can use and read information.  Last week we conducted our own surveys and made bar graphs.  This week we will be creating and reading our own Venn diagrams.

Fantastic Gymnastics

Primary 4/5 have started a new gymnastics block in PE.

We have been learning different types of rolls and  jumps.

Today we were learning different types of holds: bridge hold, balance hold, plank and partner hold.


I can see some superstars in the making! 🙂

Family Ceilidh

As part of our Scottish month we are holding a Family Ceilidh on Thursday 30th January at 6.30pm – 8.30pm.

Come along for a fabulous night of dancing to a live ceilidh band!

Some of our P6 and P7 will  be entertaining us with some Scottish songs and light refreshments will be provided.

Tickets cost £2 per adult. In order to allocate a child’s ticket on ParentPay a 1 pence charge is required.   Money raised from the ticket sales will go towards hiring the hall for the evening.  Tickets are limited and will therefore be allocated on a first come first served basis.


Primary 7 – Scottish Parliament Outreach Programme

Primary 7 have been learning about the Scottish Parliament and were visited today by Mairead Mackechnie as part of the Scottish Parliament Outreach Programme. The class enjoyed learning about the Parliament, taking part in a manifesto and voting activity and debating on the length of the school week. It was a fantastic session!

Football Training

Football training, for Primary 5, 6 & 7, will start again on a weekly basis from Wednesday 15 January from 3.00 p.m. – 4.15 p.m. Vibrant Community permission forms have been issued today. Please return these forms by Monday 13 January. Rachel Scott will be taking the training.
