Some of our parents joined us for a Stay and Play session in our outdoor learning area. They had great fun trying out our resources, found lots of bugs and were able to see how their children learn through play. Thanks to everyone who managed to join us.
This morning the ECC children joined in the Community Clean Up and headed out to pick up litter. They worked really hard and collected quite a few bags. Thank you to Tam McKinnon for involving the ECC and inspiring them to keep Catrine tidy.
We have been busy doing lots of active maths both inside and outside.
They have been using games like hopscotch to develop their number recognition, counting and ordering.
They have also been using natural objects such as pinecones and conkers to practice counting, estimating and matching amounts to the number.
In the Gruffalo Room the children have enjoyed telling stories to each other – this develops their communication skills including pre-reading skills.
They have been doing lots of cutting and sticking- this requires concentration and uses their fine motor skills.
Games such as Matching Pairs and Pack my Bag have been very popular. The children are learning to take turns and working out the rules of the game. They need also need to focus and use their observation skills.
In the Hungry Caterpillar Room the children had pizza for their snack, they choose their own toppings and put them on the bases.
Making choices about their snack and helping to prepare it encourages them to be independent and to try new foods.
In the ECC the children have been enjoying lots of Christmas activities. On Tuesday they had their Christmas parties, and played party games before having some tasty snacks including lovely ice-cream donated by Dino’s.
Santa managed to take time out of his busy schedule to visit the children, and was treated to some great singing by the boys and girls.
Aiken Drum visited the ECC and the children really enjoyed his Christmas Show. There were lots of songs to join in and they especially liked We’re Going On a Bear Hunt.
The ECC children along with the school choir sang their Christmas songs in the village square. Both the morning and afternoon performances had a great audience of family and friends.
Catrine ECC was an exhibitor at East Ayrshire’s O Factor, this was a showcase for all the amazing outdoor learning that is happening throughout East Ayrshire.
Jan Wardrop our Outdoor Learning Champion in the ECC was a Nominee for the Excellent Outdoor Practitioner Award. This was for the hard work she has put in to improving and extending Outdoor Learning in the ECC. This was shown in the efforts she put in to the stall she set up for the O Factor exhibition. Practitioners from other centres showed lots of interest and Jan was happy to explain all the things we have been doing.
On Friday we had some spotty children in the ECC and collected money for Children in Need. They had a busy time making spotty bracelets, crowns and pictures.
In the Elmer room the children have still been finding out about day and night. They have been talking about their daily routines and what they do at different times of the day and about when it gets dark.
They made telescopes so they could see what was in the sky during the day and at night.
In the ECC we had a Halloween day, many of the children dressed up and we hunted for bugs in the leaves and had a tray of worms to investigate. Some of the children help to carve a pumpkin and found out what is inside the pumpkin.
In the Monkey Room the children had been talking about the bin lorry after they watched it emptying the ECC bins. They talked about the different bins that they had at home and how different things went into different bins. They found out that some rubbish can be re-cycled and made into new things and that they shouldn’t drop their litter outside.
The children had been watching the diggers outside the nursery, so in the Gruffalo Room we ended up with a construction site. They have worked on foundations, building up the brick work, plumbing and drinking lots of tea.
In the Elmer Room we have been helping to make play dough as well as doing lots of painting and drawing.
Outdoors we have been using the ladders, planks and crates; working together to build them up.
We have been using the song box outside. We pick the song we want to sing using the props in the box.
In the Gruffalo Room we have been playing in the house corner, drawing, writing and working together.
