It’s an exciting time in P5/6 as we are learning lots of new skills. We are becoming Chess masters as we continue to learn all of the pieces on the board and follow the rules of the game. We are getting very good at it and our problem solving skills are improving each week. This week we taught the P6/7 class how to play, they found it tricky at first but we helped them with their moves and captures.
This week we also started a block of rugby. We played lots of different games to get us familiar with some of the rules. We will be taking part in rugby for the next three weeks on a Wednesday.
We are well into our novel study, Charlotte’s Web and we are enjoying our new reading trios. We are developing out comprehension through lots of different activities.
The pupils are focusing on a new genre this week in writing. They have been researching several polar animals and will use this information to create a non- chronological report on the polar regions.
Maths
P5/6 are continuing with angles this week. The pupils have been learning to compare and order angles and are now investigating angles in triangles!
Other Curricular Areas
The pupils in P5/6 have been focusing on kindness and friendship this week. They are also looking forward to starting our very own ‘Catrine Compliments’ on Monday!
The pupils have been learning to use direct speech in their writing using macaroni! They have also been focusing on letter writing this week and have written some amazing letters to people who inspire them.
Maths
P5/6 have enjoyed taking learning outdoors in maths this week when learning about angles. All pupils were able to name and label different types of angles and could identify examples in the outdoor environment.
Other Curricular Areas
Pupils are moving onto netball in P.E and have been focusing on their passing skills.
It’s been an awfie busy week sae faur in P5/6. We read oor Scot’s book, The Boy and the Bunnet and did hunners ae activities fae musical soond effects tae paintin characters based on hoo they soond.
The day we drank some Irn-Bru and haud some Tunnocks treats and short breed. We cut up the wrappers and did symmetry airt. We hope yi like it.
We were fair knackered efter PE this week as we ur workin oan oor runnin this term. We also plaid wi the new buildin bits fur ootside. We loved that!
In maths we wur learning multiplication and working oan oor number talks. We even sterted a new novel caud, Charlotte’s Web. We cannae wait tae get richt intae it.
As part of our Scotland focus we are hoping to have some traditional Scottish treats tomorrow (Wednesday). This will include some shortbread, Tunnocks tea cakes and caramel wafers. We will wash them down with some Irn-Bru. If you would rather your child didn’t eat or drink the above please contact the school office to let us know.

P5/6 have been exploring the poem ‘Willie Wastle’ by Robert Burns. The pupils listened carefully to the poem and were able to use visualisation to draw a picture of what Willie Wastle’s wife looked like. The pupils in P5/6 have also been learning to write a newspaper report this week. This involved interviewing a witness and gathering information using the 5 W’s to write their report.
Maths
Additionally, the pupils have been learning to round money in maths this week and can now confidently use this strategy when purchasing various items.
Other Curricular Areas
As part of their Scottish topic, P5/6 have been investigating Scottish clans. The pupils were able to recognise different clans by looking at their tartan and crest. They were then able to research their chosen clan names such as Campbell, Gordon and Fraser.
The pupils have also enjoyed participating in strings again this week and look forward to learning to play new songs on their instruments!
The pupils have been learning to calculate change using the counting on strategy. They have also been learning to work within a budget which has involved giving pupils experience of using ICT equipment to shop online for groceries and other electrical items.
Literacy
Additionally, P5/6 pupils have been learning to use alliteration to improve their writing. The pupils are now confident in using this technique and were able to think of some creative alliterated ice cream flavours. Would you be willing to try Manky Macaroni flavoured ice cream? As part of our new Scotland topic, the pupils also learned the meaning of some Scottish words.
Other Curricular Areas
Continuing with our Scotland topic, the pupils’ music knowledge was put to the test as they were tasked with identifying various Scottish songs and artists. They have also been exploring the artistic style of Romero Britto and created their very own calendars using his work for inspiration.
It’s been a crafty Christmas week in P5/6. There might not have been many of us in school but we took our Christmas cheer to the next level. We made lots of crafts including our own crackers (complete with joke, hat and treat), festive stones, hama bead decorations and gingerbread houses. We also had time for a Christmas movie and some snacks.
