We have had such a busy week here in Primary One.  In literacy we were learning the ‘j’ and ‘v’ sounds. We played in jelly,  built volcanoes, designed a village and pretended to be vets.  It was so much fun.  The new sounds are in the book bags for you to practise at home.

For our writing this week we made delicious jam sandwiches and we then wrote a set of instructions.  We even took our crusts out to feed the birds so there was no waste.

In maths we have been working on Subtraction within ten and have been learning to use a number line to help us work out the calculations.

Finally, we started our new topic on Lunar New Year today and we watched a video clip of two children explaining how they celebrate this wonderful festival.  The children in the video cleaned the whole house and then decorated it with beautiful red banners.  This inspired us to do the same with our house corner and we even made some of our own lovely banners which we will display next week.

This term we are investigating functional writing including learning to write instructions. Tomorrow we are planning to make jam sandwiches and then write our instructions.

This week we have also been playing with ‘jelly’ as part of our ‘j’ sound and the children have came up with the idea of experimenting  to make their own ‘jelly’.  They helped write a shopping list of the ingredients and we plan to make this next week.

Primary 7 – Fundraising Event

How many sweets are in the jar?? Please see attached poster for all information.

Primary 7

We started our Scotland topic this week and the children have been exploring our village.  We went a walk around Catrine and had a look at some of the places we recognised.

We learned about the Scottish flag and made our own to hang up in class.  Isn’t it beautiful?

Our stars of the day this week were:

• Callum for great singing.
• Riley for taking care to add detail to his drawings.
• Layla for fantastic writing.
• Ava for amazing effort in reading.
• Carter for brilliant word building.

As part of our Scotland topic all the classes are learning a Scots poem.  The Primary 1 poem is Crocodile by J K Annand.

Crocodile by J K Annand

When doukin in the River Nile
I met a muckle crocodile.
He flicked his tail, he blinked his ee,
Syne bared his ugsome teeth at me.

Says I, ‘I never saw the like,
Cleaning your teeth maun be a fyke!
What sort a besom do ye hae
To brush a set o teeth like thae?”

The crocodile said, ‘Nane ava.
I never brush my teeth at aa!
A wee bird redds them up, ye see,
And saves me monie a dentist’s fee.

We will be sending a paper copy of the poem tomorrow in your child’s book bags.  Please practice it with them as we will be filming a class performance for the blog at the end of the month.

Please ensure that the books bags are in tomorrow as we shall be sending a few things home.  If you cannot find your child’s book bag or sound cards, please write a wee note and we can issue new ones.

Common Words

By the end of the week, the children will all be sent home with lists of common words. (These will be added to as we go through the year). It is really important that these are practised at home as this will have a positive impact on reading and writing in class. Some ideas of activities you could do with them could be:

• Read them aloud and say a sentence with the word in it.
• Write them (fancy letters, coloured pencils, type them)
• Find them in books
• Write 2 sets on paper and play ‘match the words’ memory game
• Make your own fun game using the words: find them hidden in the house, bingo etc

PE: Walk Around Catrine

We plan to start having a weekly walks around the village as part of our Health and Wellbeing, as well as linking to our Scotland topic. These walks will be on Tuesday afternoons, however this may change due to weather. Please check blog regularly for any changes. Suitable footwear and clothing should be worn on these days.
