Primary 1/2

Primary 1/2

Numeracy and Mathematics

In P1/2 the boys and girls have been working hard to learn about the value of number and its place using the new Linda Keith maths strategy. This new strategy is being used throughout the school to ensure pupils are gaining a deep and conceptual understanding of number.

Children in primary 1 are exploring numbers to 20, and how to add and subtract within 10 using a wide variety of resources. They will be counting, ordering, calculating and sequencing these numbers through games and activities.

Children in primary two are exploring the value of numbers larger than 20. They will be working on subtraction and addition using a wide variety of concrete materials, as well as number lines and various methods of calculating.

P1/2 will also learn about measurement and what it is used for in the wider world. They will learn how to estimate, sort, and measure in a variety of ways.

Literacy and English

Primary 1 children are using a variety of songs, rhymes and stories to engage them in literacy activities. They are learning new sounds and digraphs through Jolly Phonics and doing various activities to strengthen their awareness of them. In writing the P1s will continue to work on letter formation as well as beginning to write more independently.

Primary 2 children are working on revising the digraphs using Jolly Grammar. They are continuing to build on their spelling rules and using full stops and capital letters in their writing. Primary 2 children will also learn how to write a basic scientific report as part of their Electricity IDL topic.

All P1/2 pupils will continue to use Bug Club as a way to develop their reading skills. In addition to reading groups with the class teacher and learning assistants every week, pupils are encouraged to access the Bug Club website to complete approximately 2 books per week. (Access to Bug Club will be given in class in the event that the pupil cannot access it at home).

IDL

P1/2 will be learning all about electricity in term 3. They will learn about what we use electricity for, how it works, and also how to stay safe around it. The pupils will conduct a selection of STEM experiments relating to this topic to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding.

Art and Design

Pupils will explore a range of materials to develop skills and techniques to create own art work, encouraging their imagination and creativity.

Music

P1/2 will be developing a wide variety of musical skills with our music specialist, Mrs Hill. The pupils will explore beats, patterns and more using a variety of different musical methods.

ICT

Primary 1/2 will be learning the basics of computer coding in term 3. The pupils will use their problem solving skills and teamwork to be able to decode, code and debug basic algorithms using computer games and robotic toys.
