Miss Lee’s SLC Groups

Hi everyone, I hope you are all well. It’s so nice to see the sunshine has come back, and hope that you have been able to go outside and enjoy it a bit especially after the rain and winds at the weekend. As I’m posting this on a Wednesday I have cut down the number of activities for you. Hope that you enjoy having a go at some of them, but there is no pressure to get through them. The most important thing is that you are happy and healthy at the moment.

Literacy

Bug Club – Go in and have a read of one of your books with someone that you live with. A few of you have new books too because you have been very busy reading which is fantastic. Don’t forget to do the quiz.

Spelling Challenge –  In the packs that you got delivered there is a “Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check” sheet for spelling. Put this into your overwriting pocket and use it to practice these common words that have the ‘sh’ sound in them.

  • shed
  • shoe
  • shop
  • wash
  • wish
  • dish

Talking & Listening – In your new Home Learning Pack there is a set of sheets to help you make a Time Capsule or Memory Box for this time that you are at home. Why not do the Interview page. Pick someone in your family and ask them the questions that are there and note down their answers if you can.

Numeracy

Shape Hunt – This week can you do a 3D shape hunt around your house? Use your white board and divide it into 4 sections like this.

Cubes

Cubes are like this. There faces are squares.

Spheres

A Sphere is a ball.

Cylinders

Cuboids

Can you go around your house and look to see what you can find that are these shapes writing down or getting someone to help you write them down.

Outdoor Maths Challenge – Pick two of your Numeracy Challenge cards from your new pack and have a go at them. You could let me know which ones you’ve tried by leaving a comment below.

Online

There’s plenty of number and shape activities you could try in Sumdog and Topmarks.

Science – How to Make a Sparkly Volcano   Explained: Asia's deadliest eruptions – and four volcanoes to ...

Why not have a go at making your very own sparkly volcano. The reaction between the baking soda and the vinegar causes the a gas to form (carbon dioxide) which causes all the fizzing.

You will need:-

  • Tall thin container
  • 3 tbsp baking soda
  • 120ml vinegar
  • Food colouring
  • Glitter
  • Baking tray

Instructions

Place your container on the baking tray, this will help catch the mess. Add the baking soda into the container. Pour in some food colouring and glitter. Then quickly pour in the vinegar and watch your sparkly eruption take place.

Something Else To Try

This week Ali, Niamh and I tried a new recipe for Choc Chip Cookies and they turned out really well and passed the taste test too. So if you fancy having a go at these here’s the recipe.

Choc Chip Cookies

You will need:- 115g soft butter

55g caster sugar

140g plain flour

40g chocolate chips

  1. Heat the oven to 180C.
  2. Beat the butter and sugar together until it is light and fluffy.
  3. Mix in the flour and chocolate chips with your hands until you have a dough.
  4. Take portions of dough and roll it in between your hands to make a ball about the size of a walnut.
  5. Put the cookies onto a baking tray slightly apart from one another and flatten them with your fingers or the palm of your hand.
  6. Cook in the oven for 10-12minutes.
  7. Let them cool on a wire rack.

I hope you are all doing well and will be in phoning to find out how you all are and hopefully you will be able to have some fun trying some of these activities.

Missing you all.

SLC 2 and Mrs Blaney’s group 27th May

Hi everyone,

I am so pleased the lovely weather is back and I hope you enjoyed the long weekend. As it is a short week, I have included a few new activities but also want you to go back to the previous weeks and revise your keywords and sounds. Please get outside this week and enjoy the sunny weather as I think it has to be really warm by the end of the week!!

Miss you all,

Mrs Blaney x

Literacy

*I haven’t included any new words this week to allow others time to catch up and for some of you to revise. Remember you can use the blank board games to practice the words. Maybe you could play bingo this week or use chalk to draw a hopscotch board in your garden and say the words as you land on a square. Here is a reminder of the words you already have:

Green words                             Yellow

a              in           that                       all

and          of           the                       as

he            is            to                         be

I              it            was                       can

*I have attached a link to a story that my wee boy enjoys listening to. Click on the link and listen.

I would like you to discuss the story with someone in your house and think about all the colours your hair has been over the past weeks (my hair has been a lot of these colours!!) Can you choose 2 colours that you feel your hair has been and write about both of those colours and why you have felt this way. Draw a picture to match what you have written about.

*Remember the David Walliams website has stories you can listen to. Why not listen to a story while you chill out in the sun?

Maths

As the weather is going to be lovely this week, I have included some activities that you can complete outside.

*Click on the link below and you will see a copy of a scavenger hunt that you can use in your garden or when on your walk. You do not need to print this; you could ask an adult to copy it on to paper for you.

*When I was a wee girl, I loved to make daisy chains. Can you make your own daisy chains? Here are a few ideas of how you could use them:

https://youtu.be/CnZ0UIBn4J0

-Make chains of set numbers of daisies; 10 daisies and count how many groups of 10 you can make

-Make a chain as long as you can and use it to measure objects in your garden. Can you find things that are longer, shorter or the same length as your daisy chain.

-Challenge a member of your family and see who can make the longest daisy chain in a set amount of time.

-You could use the chains to make numbers and letters

Symmetry outside. Watch the video below and have a go at making your own symmetrical pictures. The video shows using leaves and twigs but you could have a go at making a picture using any objects from your home or garden. (Adults, remember Art Attack??*)
