Digital Learning Week

As part of Digital Learning Week P5/6 were lucky to be visited by the Digital Learning Group from Auchinleck Academy. They brought iPads and little robots called Spheros that we were able to programme.

We enjoyed playing with the Sphero. We liked drawing shapes on the iPad and letting the Sphero draw them on the floor. We used ramps to let the Sphero go over them, it was very cool! We liked changing the colours and chasing Mrs Montgomery and Skye Young with the Sphero.

It was fun and we got to make the Sphero go up ramps. We drew shapes on the iPad and the Sphero drew the shape on the floor. We tried to make it jump over ramps and paint trays. We made it say “Alright mate” and make chicken sounds and we drove it about. It was fun! It crashed onto a tonne of things, and the ramps were cool. It was fun to control it on the iPad.

We played with a little ball. The cool thing is that we got to control it using an iPad. We drove them up ramps!

P5/6 News by Skye and Josh

On Monday we made small hot air balloons and wrote what we want to get better at this term.

On Tuesday we went to P.E. and did lots of fitness exercises.

On Wednesday we researched information of the Giant Panda on the internet and made a poster about them.

Easter Service

Today the whole school visited the Church for our Easter Service. We had the opportunity to perform to the rest of the school through telling facts  about Easter and how it is celebrated, fun Easter facts, a bible reading and to finish off an Easter song.

We did this with confidence and really enjoyed being on stage!

Easter STEM Challenge

Primary 5/6 and Primary 4/5 joined together this week to take part in an Easter themed STEM Challenge. Supplied with cocktail sticks, blueberries and some very cute chicks they were required to work in teams to build a house for their chicks.

What we found tricky:

  • The blueberries started to get soft and fall apart.
  • It was hard to find a design that would work.
  • If you put too weight on top it would fall over.

What we enjoyed:

  • You had to be creative.
  • We had to use our imaginations and work as a team.
  • It was messy and fun!

World Book Day

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we all dressed up as our favourite book characters and as you can see we all looked great!

During the day we created new front covers for our favourite books and rewrote the blurbs in our own words. We have used these to start creating our own class library.

Art of Learning – The Big Draw

Sadly, the Art of Learning Project came to an end last week. We have all really enjoyed our time with Ruth and Steven and will miss them coming into class.

To reflect on what we have learned throughout the project we all took part in a BIG DRAW. We all drew 3 things that have helped up develop the 3 executive functions: Cognitive Flexibility, Inhibitory Control and Working Memory!

The finished result…

You can see this hanging proudly as part of our Art of Learning display in Base 3.

Valentine Bird Feeders

Today we visited the Boswell Centre to make some Valentine Bird Feeders.

We spread peanut butter onto love hearts and then sprinkled them with bird seed.

“We used peanut butter and bird seeds.” – Josh

“We made two. We got to keep one and we hung the other one up at the Boswell Centre.” – Connor

“We hung them up on the fence” -Kaitlin

Douglas said it was a fun day and everyone agreed! Even if it was a little chilly!

Chinese Opera Masks

As part of our new class topic “China” we have been creating our very own Chinese Opera Masks.

Before creating our own we studied pictures of Chinese Opera masks and spoke about the different features and their similarities and differences.

Kaitlin: “We made Chinese Opera masks. It was a fun activity.”

Ryan: “We used paint to create them. It was exciting, I would do it again.”

Liam: “The different colour represent feelings”

Sophie: “Red represent loyal and brave.”

Douglas: “Green represent violence”

Rhian: “White represents evil.”

Connor: “Yellow represents intelligence.”

James: “Black represents rough and fierce.”

P5/6 News by Chloe & Josh

Primary 5/6 have been learning about anti-bulling and Scottish myths and legends with Ruth MacKay.

We were reading a story called the “Selkie Bride” and we took photos of emotions of the characters in the story.

On Wednesday the 15th we were in groups retelling the story using a voice recorder app on tablets.

On the 21st / 22nd we were planning an interview about Nessie, The Loch Ness Monster. We chose a person to be an eye witness or a scientist.

We were writing a story based on a short film called “Pigeon Impossible.”
