A big element to our waste action plan is Dinnae Forget Your Caddy!
Last year we had a high uptake for Dinnae forget your Caddy and we continued it for this session! This year East Ayrshire took over from the central team along with Mrs Pitt and Mr Ewing to facilitate this going out to our whole school community. Annanhill has the most East Ayrshire employee’s participating too! Please see the letters which go out monthly via our app from the central team.

Stopping Landfill Waste
We have continued to work with Rags2Ritches this session. This is to promote being environmentally friendly and stop wastage. We are also helping those in Ukraine! Rags2riches came to collect the donations we had. We raised over 320kg of reusable clothes etc, raising £80 for the school fund! Thanks for your donations #CleanGreen #Rags2Ritches ♻️♻️♻️
Primary 6B wanted some extra leadership and volunteered to support our run-up to Rags2Ritches. They took ownership and timetabling for collections at both school gates in the morning when school started and when school finished. It also helped us promote our new banner!
Promoting Community Recycling
We have continued the good work from our visit with the waste officers! We have been trying hard to use the proper bins in the lunch hall! Since getting this whole school visit we have been putting what they say into practice at school and at home!
Our School Lunch Hall
Based on the above learning we had from the Waste team, we are now trying harder to be more environmentally friendly. This has involved using wooden cutlery as opposed to polystyrene. We have also reintroduced metal cutlery after covid. We have cut down on the plastic being used for dishes for side dishes. It is only on a ‘get if you want’ stance to also stop wastage. Our monitors keep it clean and tidy, working together!
Mrs Pitt has been working hard in the school to give everyone some recycling bins. We were extra environmentally friendly by reusing photocopier boxes or spare boxes that some of us had in our classroom. We also wanted to get staff on board and started recycling in our staffroom. We have also just started using the trollies! However, some training is needed on how to use these better next session.
Topic Learning
The 3 Primary 3 classes invited parents in as part of a team task. Our topic was knights and castles and we reused and recycled old boxes as part of a STEM task. Lots of parent’s, carers and loved ones came in to support our clean green task! Look at these amazing creations! All made from junk!
Food and Health
As part of the curriculum we are enhancing our food practices! When we are preparing, cooking or handling food, we have spoken about wastage. We have learned about the importance of not wasting food when preparing a selection of dishes.
