WHAT IS DYSLEXIA?
Dyslexia is a learning difference, a combination of strengths and weaknesses which affects the learning process in reading, spelling, writing and sometimes numeracy.
Dyslexic learners may also have accompanying weaknesses in short term memory, sequencing and the speed at which they process information.
These are skills that everyone needs if they are to learn effectively in a busy classroom. They are also key skills for life.
Dyslexia Friendly Schools is an East Ayrshire initiative which aims to:
Develop a whole school awareness of what dyslexia is
- Promote the positive ethos of dyslexia as a learning difference
- Create a dyslexia friendly environment and implement alternative classroom approaches which will benefit all pupils
- Respond immediately when pupils are struggling rather than wait for a ‘label’
- Have high expectations of all pupils
- Adopt flexible approaches
Dyslexia Friendly Schools good practice is in fact good practice for all.
Our Progress so far…
At Galston we have successfully worked together as a team to achieve our Bronze and Silver award for Dyslexia Friendly Schools.
We successfully achieved our Gold Award in May 2017 and are striving to keep these standards within the school.
Every class has created a new learning wall for their class which includes a range of resources and learning aids to support learning across the school.
At Galston Primary school we use a range of different resources to support our learning. These include ear defenders, sloping boards, number squares, Clicker 7, online games, highlighted jotters, overlays as well as a range of other materials.
Our classes have been busy exploring new strategies and developing our base libraries to ensure everyone can access the curriculum with ease.
Pupils across the school have worked together to form a dyslexia friendly group and have developed their knowledge further in this area by looking at resources, and strategies to help learning as well as exploring famous celebrities with dyslexia.
