I believe my programme of work was effective because I applied the principles of effective practice throughout. This ensured that I progressed steadily and improved my performance over the course of my training programme.
As I became a more competent performer, I moved through the stages of learning and became more able to cope with more gamelike higher pressure situations. I adapted my practice sessions accordingly to keep them specific to my level of ability.
I kept my training interesting to ensure and continually compared my performance to a model performer to ensure I was motivated and give myself targets to achieve.
I monitored my training throughout to ensure I was progressing as I wanted to and to allow me to adapt or change my programme at appropriate times when I felt I was ready to progress.
When I reanalysed my performance, I found I was now performing an overhead clear in the game more effectively. My whole game analysis showed me now achieving an 80% success rate. This compared to only 40% success rate I achieved in my initial analysis.
I believe my improved overhead clear was due to me using a much more effective technique. From my movement analysis sheet I found I was now opening my shoulders to get side on in the preparation phase of the shot. This allowed me to transfer my weight better during the action phase and I was also now contacting the shuttle with a straight arm.
All these points had shown to be weaknesses in my movement analysis sheet from my first analysis so improving these points allowed me to generate more power in the shot and send the shuttle to the back of the court more consistently.
This meant that I was more confident to use the overhead clear in a game situation so I was using it in appropriate times during rallies to buy myself time when I was under pressure. This meant I could send the shuttle right to the back of the court which forced my opponent out of position and tired them out more.
It also made the return more difficult for my opponent because they had to hit the shuttle a further distance and it took away the smash as one of their options as they found it difficult to generate enough power to play an effective smash from so far back.
When I videoed my performance, my overhead clear now looked similar to that of a model performer and from my kinaesthetic feedback I also felt I was performing the skill with better fluency, control and timing.
