Litter Picking in the Community

Yesterday, during our School Parliament session, our Eco Group went out for another community litter pick. We chose to pick in roughly the same area as we had done much earlier in the year. Unfortunately, the area we had previously cleared was, once again, littered with rubbish. However, our children were not dis-heartened. They chose to be even more thorough and clear a wider area round in the field near the front of the school and at the park. Unbelievably, they collected a whirly-gig, a carpet, half of a bed and 14 bin bags of rubbish! The children know that litter looks horrible and it dangerous to wildlife. They all wish that people would take better care of where they live. Let’s hope the example our group set spreads to effect others.

Thanks again to Mrs Dale and Mrs Russell for their help and to Morris Service of Dumfries Civic Pride for the use of the litter pickers.

Keep safe in the dark!

PTDC0149

Our Road Safety Parliament Group are very keen to make sure the children in our school are safe on or near roads.  As it is now very dark in the evenings, and often when we are travelling to and from school, the children were keen to bring back high visibility vests.  We have very kindly received 100 High visibility vests from Specsavers in the town which we will be giving out to children in the school.  The group are shown modelling them here. Letters will be coming home soon!

P2 Salad Days!

P2 have been learning all about root vegetables and a couple of weeks ago the class set their taste-buds tingling when they tried a range of salads made from root vegetables; a beetroot salad, coleslaw, carrot and sultana and potato salad.

The class then had a vote on which was their favourite with the Carrot and Sultana winning out!

Today, the class got to experience making the Carrot and Sultana salad for themselves, which they then shared with the P1/2 class. We definitely have some future MasterChefs on our hands!

Swimming

Primary 6 and Primary 7 pupils are 6 days through an 8 day block of swimming at DGOne @ The IceBowl. We’ve been out of school from 10.15am until lunch, travelling to the pool by bus and enjoying a 45 min swimming lesson. We are split into 3 different groups, each work on a different skill set. Once you master the skills in one group, you are able to move up into the next group; some of us have moved up already! Going swimming is great fun; for some it is a new experience, for others we are becoming more confident in swimming and learning new techniques and the staff at the pool, are really nice to work with and learn from.

Magix Music Maker

Magix Music Maker is a computer programme which allows us to make music with different instruments. Every Monday, for 6 weeks, a very kind man named Mr Dinning comes into school and helps us to create different styles of music. As we have used this programme before, we have been creating music with different themes; so far we have created War themed music, Goofy themed music, 90’s themed music, Reggae themed music and Halloween themed music. At the end of the 6 week block, we each receive a CD with all our own music recorded onto it. This is a really fun learning experience, there is a lot of freedom for us to use our own ideas to make new music and it keeps us interested because each week is so different!

Pitch, Pulse and Magic

Primary 5 have been lucky enough to be selected to take part in the exciting project called ‘Pitch, Pulse and Magic’. The class will receive a number of live performances from musicians playing a variety of instruments. They will get a chance to learn about the different aspects required for playing music including pitch, pulse and all important magic.

Recently we learned about ‘pulse’. We were treated to a performance from Holly and Rachel who showed us different ways of playing the trumpet and the tuba. The class really enjoyed the activities.

A Challenge for P1 and P7!

20.11.15 039 20.11.15 040 20.11.15 041 20.11.15 042 20.11.15 043 20.11.15 044 20.11.15 045 20.11.15 047 20.11.15 048

P1 pupils have been learning about Toys with Mrs Love, so during Buddy Time with P7, they created 3D Lego figures. It was really challenging for all because the design was very complex! Once again, it was a pleasure to watch the children interact. Patience and determination were required from everyone. The work is now on display in the infant corridor.
