Green Flag Award!

img_0386

We are delighted to be able to formally announce that St Ninian’s Primary have earned Lochside and Lincluden’s first Green Flag! Our Eco Group gathered evidence of their Eco work over a two year period, then submitted an application to Eco School Scotland in May 2016.

We received a letter of award in September and the flag finally arrived last week. We have chosen to display it at the entrance for all to see. When on a flag pole, it is likely to end up in tatters being in all weathers! We will hopefully appear in The Standard soon.

Come and have a look – it’s fantastic!

P5, P6 and P7 Fantastic Mr Fox V’s Sleekit Mr Tod

Yesterday, 31st October, Primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils had a great day away to Glasgow Film Theatre. We went to watch Fantastic Mr Fox and listen to the Scot’s translated version, Sleekit Mr Tod.

The reviews of the film were mixed. Some of us really enjoyed the film; we though it was fast-paced, it had a great story line and was very well made. Others thought the film was intense, funny and action-packed. We thought this film was quite different; it wasn’t digitally animated and so didn’t have a cartoon-feel which we really liked and the characters were voiced well by actors which meant the characters spoke really clearly. The film brought out lots of emotion; from sympathy for Fantastic Mr Fox and Rat, to anger at the Farmer’s and their workforces. We would definitely recommend this film.

Unfortunately, some of us didn’t quite enjoy the film as much as others. Some thought is was aimed at much younger children; yet there was quite a lot of violence through-out the film which we thought was inappropriate for the audience. Some thought the film lacked excitement, that there were repeating themes and that some parts made the film too sad. That said, we had a good day out!

We were fortunate enough to hear Sleekit Mr Tod being read aloud in Scots. We thought this was good, as the reader was confident and could read Scot’s words clearly and he could explain what the words meant. Also, the reader read accurately and helped us to picture the story in our heads. We thought the reader was funny; he used great expression which helped the story become more interesting and lively.

Watch the film to find out if Fantastic Mr Fox and his family outsmart their rivals!

A big thank you to our adult helpers, without whom we would have been unable to attend. A huge thank you to all our pupils, who represented our school fantastically well!

P1 Deferment Information Meeting

Our wonderful nursery teacher, Mrs Carruthers, had the fantastic idea of holding an Deferment Information Event for our parents of children with birthdays in November to February. Mrs Carruthers, Mrs Abraham (Educational Visitor) and Mrs Anderson (Principal Teacher) talked about the deferment process.

Mrs Smith (new P1 mummy) spoke about her decision to keep her options open for her daughter. She applied for deferment and enrolled for P1 to give her longer to make a final decision. Her daughter is now in P1.

Ms Shearer (new P1 mummy) spoke of how pleased she was with her decision to defer her son last year. She felt that a further year at nursery helped prepare him for a successful start to P1.

We had a 17 year old who talked about how she wished her mum had sent her to school later because she had always felt very young among her friends.

We were able to answer questions and allay any concerns our parents had.

All that, plus Mrs Carruthers had baked scones and carrot cake!

Thank you to everyone who attended. As always, come and talk if you have any questions.

P7 Operation Safety 2016

P7 had an exciting time yesterday, at Operation Safety. We learned about First Aid, internet safety, fire risks/safety in the home, safety with bonfires and fireworks, where electricity comes from and how to be safe around indoors and outdoors. It was a fantastic experience. We finished with finding out what happens when a tiny amount of water is put on a burning chip pan. It was shocking!

Mrs Mc and I were extremely proud of the exemplary behaviour our children showed. They were outstanding and we told them so. A big thank you to Mrs Brown for coming with us.

Contact the fire service if you would like smoke alarms to be fitted in your home for free.

P7 – 5 points for answering the following question:

In relation to First Aid, what does ABC stand for?

Roald Dahl Day was a marvellous success!

We celebrated 100 years since the birth of the world’s number one storyteller, Roald Dahl, in style here at St. Ninian’s. The party was more giant than James’s peach, more enormous than a crocodile and more marvellous than George’s medicine! It was so big we even made the papers!

Here are some photos from the day. Well done to everyone who dressed up and/or donated money to Roald Dahl’s Nurses, a great charity that do a lot of good work for sick kids. The school raised £143.97. We can all be very proud. Well done everyone!

P4 Nature Walk

To get us started on our new topic – The Quest for life – Primary 4 did just that.  We went out into the playground to find living and non living things.  We found lots of interesting things including a slug, lots of spiders and bugs, a worm and plants.  We also found string, wood, some litter and even some glue from a glue gun.  Have a look and see what you can find in our garden!
