Visit to an orchard

What a fun afternoon we had at Lincluden Abbey last Monday.  The children went to see the community orchard that was planted a few years ago and enjoyed looking for apples to pick.

The boys and girls collected different varieties of apples.

They also investigated technology and were learning about forces so they could peel and core the apples, ready to enjoy.

A Virtual Experience in P7

Today, as an introduction to our Natural Disasters topic, James McLeod (Infrastructure Manager for D and G Council) visited P7 to talk to us about the causes and effects of flooding in our local area. He explained the ways in which the council are trying to improve the Whitesands and Greensands areas of Dumfries. We also looked at different ways that homes can be protected from flooding.

We were lucky enough to be able to see a virtual representation of how the area will hopefully look in the future on the big screen, but also using fantastic Virtual Reality goggles. Even Mrs Fisher had a go!

You can have a look at the virtual images and find out more information at:

CSI Workshop – P7

Primary 7 pupils visited Wigtown, to take part in a Crime Scene Investigation workshop, as part of Wigtown Science Festival. We all had a great day, discovering how science can help the police solve crimes. We discovered clues, and worked together to identify the suspect in a fake crime.

We were able to dress up and be photographed in an ID parade; we examined fingerprints and matched them to prints taken from the crime scene; we used UltraViolet lights to unearth hidden footprints and examined soil samples using high powered microscopes. It really was interesting – everyone really enjoyed themselves!

Mrs Storey was very impressed at the way everyone represented our school! We are all looking forward to our next adventure.

Gardening

We were so pleased with our summer crop of vegetables that we decided to find out which plants grow well in winter.  We went on a trip to Garden Wise Garden Centre where Alistair helped us choose some new plants for our garden.  We bought leeks, broad beans, peas and a raspberry bush.  We have been busy this week digging and planting. We can’t wait until they are ready to eat too!

Food, Glorious Food!

Three weeks into the new term and the children have been really busy.  They were amazed to find a great crop of vegetables had sprouted over the summer.  They worked really hard to harvest potatoes, onions, carrots and turnips.

The children decided to make soup with their vegetables.  They shared their ideas on how to use knives safely and were able to show what they had learned.

The soup tasted very, very good.

Music Maestro!

P4 were visited by 4 members of The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland who played for us to demonstrate the pitch each instrument could play.  Then the children got the opportunity to have a go playing some of the instruments.  We have many budding string players in our class!
