Ice Investigators

The cold weather has given us lots of opportunities for learning outside.  The children were very excited to find ice all over the Nursery garden on Friday morning.

It was great fun finding ice all over the garden.

The boys wanted to have a close look at the ice crystals.

They used magnifying glasses to examine the ice and found some strange things.

The boys found numbers hidden in the ice.

What do you think this looks like?  The children thought it was a spider.

One block of ice looked like it had a spider inside and the children wanted to get it out to see what it was.  Lots of suggestions were made for how to get inside the ice. “We can smash it.” “We can drop it.” “We can hold it in our hand.”  All of these suggestions were tried but they found the ice wasn’t disappearing quick enough.

It takes great team work to solve a problem.

One of our children then suggested that we should get some hot water.  The water melted the ice and the children discovered that it was a tiny stone inside the ice – not a spider, we were all very surprised!

It’s not a spider – just a stone!

This prompted the children to make their own ice blocks and freeze objects inside to see how they change.  Watch out for the next post to see what happened to them.
