In Primary 5 we have been learning all about Christmas traditions from around the world. We have had a world Advent Calendar and we have learned new facts everyday.

Here are some of our favourites:

“In New Zealand they call their Christmas tree a ‘pohutukawa’.” Dylan R

“In India they decorate banana and mango trees at Christmas.” Finnlay

“In Venezuela, people go to church on Christmas Morning on roller skates.” Amy

“In Japan, the traditional Christmas Dinner is fried chicken and many people order a KFC weeks in advance!” Keira

We also found out that:

The Christmas Carol ‘Silent Night’ originates from Austria.

In Poland, people place hay under the table cloth for Christmas dinner and an extra place setting is always created for unexpected visitors.

In Holland, children fill their shoes with carrots on Christmas Eve so that Santa will fill them with small presents and sweets.

We were also able to sample some festive treats from Sweden. Most of the class enjoyed the ‘Aromatic Festive Soft Drink’ and we all enjoyed the Christmas biscuits!
