{"id":6173,"date":"2026-04-22T15:49:47","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T14:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/stjosephsprimary\/?p=6173"},"modified":"2026-04-22T15:57:33","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T14:57:33","slug":"%f0%9f%8c%8d%e2%9a%a1-outdoor-energy-investigators-p7s-leading-the-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/stjosephsprimary\/?p=6173","title":{"rendered":"\ud83c\udf0d\u26a1 Outdoor Energy Investigators for Earth Day \u2013 P7s Leading the Way!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We took our learning outside this week for a fantastic <strong>Learning for Sustainability<\/strong> lesson all about <strong>renewable and non-renewable energy<\/strong> &#8211; and what a success it was! \ud83c\udf31<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was especially meaningful as we celebrated <strong>Earth Day<\/strong>, helping us to think about how we can all look after our planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our P7 leaders \u2013 Ross, Myra, Danielle and Gregor \u2013 were absolutely brilliant at guiding the younger pupils through a series of hands-on <strong>outdoor investigations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd04 Rotational Grouping Approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We used a<strong> rotational grouping approach<\/strong>, where mixed-age groups moved between three different outdoor learning stations. This helps all pupils stay engaged, active, and supported, while giving everyone the chance to experience each activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each station focused on a different type of renewable energy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u2600\ufe0f <strong>Solar energy (shadow and heat investigation)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83d\udca8 <strong>Wind energy (movement and materials test)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\ud83d\udd25 <strong>Solar heating (sun vs shade comparison)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The transitions were smooth, and pupils built their understanding as they rotated through each task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udf3f Outdoor Learning at Its Best<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking the lesson outdoors allowed pupils to experience energy in a real and meaningful way. They:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drew and revisited shadows to observe the sun\u2019s energy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tested different materials to see what the wind could move<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compared water in the sun and shade to explore heat energy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This kind of <strong>outdoor learning<\/strong> made the science feel relevant, active, and engaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83c\udfaf P7 Leadership and Play-Based Learning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A huge well done to our P7s, who led each station with confidence and enthusiasm. They:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Explained each experiment clearly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supported and encouraged younger pupils<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Used great vocabulary to explain <strong>renewable and non-renewable energy<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Asked thoughtful questions to deepen understanding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It was fantastic to see them stepping into leadership roles and supporting learning through a <strong>play-based, active approach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcac What We Learned<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of the lesson, pupils could:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Identify examples of <strong>renewable energy<\/strong> such as sun and wind<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Begin to understand <strong>non-renewable energy<\/strong> and why it can run out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explain how energy from nature can be used in everyday life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2b50 A Brilliant Example of Learning in Action<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a great example of how our <strong>outdoor learning<\/strong> and <strong>play-based learning<\/strong> can create a rich and meaningful learning experience for all pupils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linking our learning to <strong>Earth Day<\/strong> helped us reflect on how we can all play a part in protecting our planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are especially proud of our P7s
