A Science Experiment with a Twist \ud83d\udc0d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This week, our Primary 5\u20137 pupils at St Joseph\u2019s took part in a \ud83e\udde0 <em>fascinating science experiment<\/em> as part of our learning about AI in medicine \u2013 and it certainly fizzed up some excitement!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We explored the idea that artificial intelligence (AI) can help scientists design proteins that neutralise<strong> <\/strong>snake venom \u2013 turning something deadly into something harmless. To help us understand this, we carried out a fun classroom experiment using<strong> <\/strong>coloured water as our pretend <em>venom<\/em> and a baking soda solution<strong> <\/strong>as our <em>antivenom<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we mixed the two, pupils were amazed to see that the colour got lighter, bubbles formed, and in some cases, it fizzed up quite dramatically! It was the perfect way to understand how neutralisation works and how AI-designed proteins could potentially save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The class found the whole lesson really engaging and fun \u2013 there were lots of <em>\u201coohs,\u201d \u201caahs,\u201d and giggles<\/em> as the reactions took place! \ud83c\udf08 We also had a fantastic class discussion about the <em>ethical side<\/em> of using AI in medicine, especially around the issue of animal testing. Pupils shared thoughtful opinions and listened respectfully to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone came away from the lesson having learned a lot about science, technology, and ethics, and we\u2019re already looking forward to finding out what else AI might be able to do in the future! \ud83c\udf0d A brilliant afternoon of learning and laughter \u2013 and a class full of curious young minds!
