Primary 1- 4 got thinking about the environmental impact of plastic litter as part of their science topic on renewables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We took part in an online webinar and watched a video on how plastic pollution is harming our oceans and marine wildlife and discussed the differences between organic and inorganic waste. The children were surprised to learn how long plastic takes to biodegrade. Plastic waste can take\u00a0anywhere from 20 to 500 years<\/strong>\u00a0to decompose, and even then, it never fully disappears; it just gets smaller and smaller!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Our responsible citizens shared their ideas on what action we can take to do our part. They came up with the following ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n
Reduce the amount of plastic we use (e.g. reuse and refill water bottles)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Recycle our plastic (and other materials) waste in the council recycling bins at home<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Reuse plastic (e.g. make bird feeders out of old bottles)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
The children were keen to take immediate action, so they worked together to carry out a litter pick in our school grounds. The boys and girls discussed the different kinds of litter we found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plastic lids<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Crisp packets and wrappers<\/li>\n\n\n\n
Plastic bottles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
We are doing our bit to help the protect our planet!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
