Self Care for Parents / Guardians

What Is Self-Care: Why Does It Matter for School Attendance?

When we talk about self-care, we often think about children and young people, however, self-care for parents and carers is just as important.

Supporting a child to attend school regularly can be both physically and emotionally demanding. Mornings can feel rushed. Worries about friendships, behaviour, sleep, anxiety and/or family pressures can build up. When adults feel exhausted or overwhelmed, it becomes much harder to manage these challenges calmly and consistently.

Looking after yourself is not selfish, it is one of the most powerful ways to support your child.

Parent self-care includes:

  • Getting enough rest where possible
  • Asking for help from family, friends or services
  • Talking about your own worries instead of carrying them alone
  • Taking short breaks to reset during stressful moments
  • Setting realistic expectations for yourself and your child or young person
  • Accessing support early when things feel difficult

Children notice how adults respond to stress. When they see calm problem solving, healthy boundaries and openness about emotions, they learn to manage their own feelings more effectively. This helps reduce anxiety around school and builds resilience.

Regular school attendance is strongly linked to positive wellbeing. When parents feel supported and emotionally steady, mornings are smoother, communication is clearer, and children feel safer and more secure about attending.

In Dumfries and Galloway Council , we recognise that supporting attendance means supporting families. If you are finding things difficult, please reach out to your school early support makes a difference.

Looking after yourself helps you look after your child. And that helps them thrive.
