Flexi Schooling is an arrangement where a child attends school on a part-time basis, with agreed learning taking place at home for the remaining time.
Your child remains fully enrolled at their school. The school continues to have responsibility for ensuring they receive an appropriate education overall.
Flexi Schooling is different from home education. It is a shared agreement between parents and the school.
Under Section 28 of the Education (Scotland) Act 1980, parents can request Flexi Schooling in writing. Each request is considered individually by the Head Teacher.
Flexi Schooling is normally limited to no more than 20% of a pupil’s attendance and should not exceed 10% of the total school roll.
All arrangements are confirmed in writing and reviewed regularly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who decides if Flexi Schooling is approved?
The Head Teacher considers each written request. Requests are usually granted unless there are clear reasons not to (for example, concerns about wellbeing or lack of a suitable learning plan).
Does my child stay on the school roll?
Yes. Your child remains fully enrolled and included in class organisation and school records.
Who is responsible for education during Flexi School time?
The school retains overall responsibility for ensuring your child receives a suitable education. Parents must outline the learning that will take place during time at home.
How is attendance recorded?
During agreed Flexi School periods, the register is marked as “Education Outwith School.”
How long does Flexi Schooling last?
Arrangements are reviewed regularly and at least annually. Either the school or parents can withdraw from the agreement with two weeks’ notice.
Can my child attend school on Flexi days for special events?
Possibly. Attendance at trips, events or productions during Flexi time is at the discretion of the Head Teacher.
What if my request is declined?
There is no formal appeal process under national legislation. If you are dissatisfied, you can raise the matter through Dumfries and Galloway Council’s complaints handling process.
If you are considering Flexi Schooling, please contact your child’s school in the first instance to discuss your request. Early conversation helps ensure the best outcome for your child.
