D&G Music Service: Come and Play Sessions 2024/25

Dumfries & Galloway Music Service are pleased to invite your young musicians to our Come and Play Sessions for the 2024/25 school year.

On four of the dates this year we are pleased to welcome the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland (NYOS) Engage project. During these sessions, musicians and NYOS staff will join us at The Bridge supported by the Instrumental Music Service team and our secondary school music teacher colleagues. These dates will be for secondary pupils and all guitarists only.

On all dates, sessions will be at The Bridge, Dumfries. Outside of the NYOS days and our final concert date, we will also be holding rehearsal days in Stranraer Academy for Brass, Guitar, Woodwind, Strings and Percussion. This limits the number of days pupils in the West will travel through to Dumfries. Please indicate if you wish to take up this option in the form.

We are encouraging all young musicians to attend all sessions, however, this is not a requirement. If you can only attend a few, please still sign up.

On the following dates below, from 10am – 3pm:

Community Enterprise Survey

Community Enterprise are consultants to third sector organisations. They are carrying out a piece of work for Sanquhar Enterprise Company to look at whether the Whigham’s Inn site could be taken into community ownership.

The proposal is that affordable housing could be developed at the site. There could also be space for a commercial use alongside the housing. Sanquhar Enterprise Company is looking for suggestions from the community on what they would like to see at the site. An initial idea is to develop a community owned bunkhouse alongside the housing, but Sanquhar Enterprise Company is open to other ideas that could benefit the community.

If you would like to have a say in this you are invited to complete the community survey – online at this link: https://bit.ly/WhighamsInn

Alternatively, paper copies will be available at Sanquhar Post Office or Brown’s Newsagents, both on the High Street.

Summer of Play 2024

We are delighted to bring you information about this year’s summer holiday activity offer for children and young people through Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Summer of Play funding scheme. Third Sector organisations and Council Services have been allocated funding to run fun and free activities and programmes the length and breadth of the region for the duration of the school holiday period. Activities and programmes are taking place in each of the 12 Ward areas across Dumfries and Galloway, and there is something for everyone.

The programme of activities will run from Tuesday 2nd July – Tuesday 20th August and are specifically aimed at children and young people aged 5-16 years old who sit within the priority groups that the fund is aimed at (lone parent families; families which include a disabled adult or child; larger families with 3 or more children; minority ethnic families; families with a child under 1 in the household; families where the mother is under 25 years of age).

There is a huge variety of activities on offer across the region such as summer camps, jewellery workshops, cooking workshops, issue-based group work opportunities, carriage driving, family fun days, workshops exploring local history and culture, free leisure facility access, day trips, performing arts sessions and more.

The extensive programmes and activities that are available throughout the duration of the school summer holidays aim to provide support to children and young people who may struggle to access experiences during holiday periods, giving them the opportunity to play, socialise and get to know organisations and support services local to them.

To view the Summer of Play 2024 offer, you can visit our website www.youthenquiryservice.org/whats-on where you can search activities by postcode or town, and/or key word such as “sports” or “arts and crafts”. For more information, please email AmazingSummer@dumgal.gov.uk
