{"id":3432,"date":"2018-06-19T11:41:17","date_gmt":"2018-06-19T11:41:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/portpatrickprimary\/?p=3432"},"modified":"2018-06-20T09:19:36","modified_gmt":"2018-06-20T09:19:36","slug":"science-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/portpatrickprimary\/?p=3432","title":{"rendered":"Science Investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Primary 4-7 \u00a0participated in a national SSERC Glow Science Meet online hosted by Thornhill Primary School.\u00a0 The theme of the investigation was to use our technologies skills to construct an &#8216;O&#8217; ring glider. Along with other schools participating, we followed the video link instructions on how to construct our glider.<\/p>\n<p>The activity then extended to consider a fair scientific investigation.\u00a0 We asked ourselves the following question:\u00a0 How can the shape of the flights on an &#8216;O&#8217; ring glider affect the distance the glider travels?<\/p>\n<p>The children were challenged to consider how to make this a fair test.\u00a0 They were very thorough and identified the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We will keep the material and length of the shaft the same.<\/li>\n<li>We will use the same length and weight of cardboard strips for our flights.<\/li>\n<li>We will launch the gliders in the same way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The only thing we decided to change was\u00a0 to alter the &#8216;O&#8217; ring flight shape to a square &#8216;box&#8217; shape.<\/p>\n<p>The children constructed both prototypes and predicted which design would travel the farthest.\u00a0 We had fun testing them in our playground. After repeating our test, to ensure a clear trend, our conclusion was that the cylindrical shapes travelled a little farther.\u00a0 We think this is because this was a more aerodynamic, streamlined shape.<\/p>\n<p>We applied maths to measure the strips and to measure the distance of the longest flight for each trial.<\/p>\n<p>It proved a very informative challenge.<\/p>\n<p># Successful learners<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Primary 4-7 \u00a0participated in a national SSERC Glow Science Meet online hosted by Thornhill Primary School.\u00a0 The theme of the investigation was to use our technologies skills to construct an &#8216;O&#8217; ring glider.
