{"id":3168,"date":"2018-04-26T06:15:47","date_gmt":"2018-04-26T06:15:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/portpatrickprimary\/?p=3168"},"modified":"2018-04-27T15:59:46","modified_gmt":"2018-04-27T15:59:46","slug":"logan-gardens-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/portpatrickprimary\/?p=3168","title":{"rendered":"Logan Gardens Plant Biodiversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The whole school travelled to Logan Gardens today for a &#8216;Lost Word&#8217; experience.\u00a0 Kate, our ranger from the Royal Botanical Society of Edinburgh, used poetry\u00a0for an\u00a0exploration of\u00a0our local natural environment; looking at biodiversity in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>The focus was on the book, The Lost Words, which is a collaborative project between writer Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris.\u00a0 The Lost Words celebrates the relationship between language and the living world, and of nature\u2019s power to spark the imagination. Robert Macfarlane has created a series of spell-poems \u2013 one for each &#8216;lost&#8217; or underused word in nature\u00a0\u2013 while Jackie Morris, inspired by her lifelong passion for Britain\u2019s landscapes and wildlife, has painted\u00a0 watercolours and used gold leaf to take the viewer on a visual journey of nature.\u00a0 Every school in Scotland will receive a copy of this book as a result of a Crowd Funding project.<\/p>\n<p>The children went for a poetry walk around the garden where Kate shared examples of\u00a0poetry and art\u00a0describing nature using figurative language.\u00a0 The\u00a0pupils\u00a0were then set the challenge of using their senses to discover the nature around them, creating a word bank to share with the whole group of what they found.\u00a0 The boys and girls also created natural sculpture artwork using foraged materials to represent their particular plant of study.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone enjoyed the session and we were very lucky to have missed both the preceding hail storm and the following downpour.<\/p>\n<p>#Successful Learners<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The whole school travelled to Logan Gardens today for a &#8216;Lost Word&#8217; experience.\u00a0 Kate, our ranger from the Royal Botanical Society of Edinburgh, used poetry\u00a0for an\u00a0exploration of\u00a0our local natural environment; looking at biodiversity in a different way.
