{"id":2519,"date":"2017-09-05T08:42:59","date_gmt":"2017-09-05T08:42:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/portpatrickprimary\/?p=2519"},"modified":"2017-09-05T08:49:43","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T08:49:43","slug":"crime-scene-investigators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/portpatrickprimary\/?p=2519","title":{"rendered":"Crime Scene Investigators"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Class 2 travelled to Wigtown in their role as Crime Scene Investigators as part of Dumfries and Galloway&#8217;s Science Fair for Schools.<\/p>\n<p>An expensive painting had been stolen and the children\u00a0were required to use\u00a0their crime busting skills to identify the culprit.\u00a0 They applied a range of\u00a0scientific and technological methods to analyse clues and evidence from the scene of the\u00a0crime.\u00a0 They worked painstakingly to identify the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pose for mug shots<\/li>\n<li>Take their own fingerprints and\u00a0identify the fingerprint pattern\u00a0for each of the suspects<\/li>\n<li>Build photo-fit composite I.D.&#8217;s from eye witness descriptions<\/li>\n<li>Run facial recognition software to narrow down suspects<\/li>\n<li>Analyse soil samples under a microscope to identify the soil type of residue left by a\u00a0footprint at the scene<\/li>\n<li>Use Ultraviolet light to match footprints to the suspects footwear<\/li>\n<li>Use microscopes to identify fibre fragments of clothing<\/li>\n<li>Use DNA coding to identify the suspect<\/li>\n<li>Take notes from eye witness accounts describing the suspect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A real life CSI was on hand to demonstrate how to take fingerprints at the scene of the crime using a range of equipment.\u00a0 She discussed her career and the kinds of knowledge and skills that are needed in the role.<\/p>\n<p>Once all the evidence had been gathered and analysed the children then came back together to discuss the list of suspects and make a conclusion as to who the art thief was.\u00a0 The crime was solved!<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the session we all enjoyed singing Happy Birthday to Lachlan.\u00a0 We enjoyed eating birthday cake even more!<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Class 2 travelled to Wigtown in their role as Crime Scene Investigators as part of Dumfries and Galloway&#8217;s Science Fair for Schools.
