{"id":7113,"date":"2022-03-11T11:42:44","date_gmt":"2022-03-11T11:42:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/kirkcolmprimary\/?p=7113"},"modified":"2022-03-11T16:57:27","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T16:57:27","slug":"let-british-science-week-commence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.glowscotland.org.uk\/dg\/kirkcolmprimary\/2022\/03\/11\/let-british-science-week-commence\/","title":{"rendered":"Let British Science Week Commence!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kirkcolm Primary got British Science Week off to a flying start today.\u00a0 John McGill of Computer Xplorers travelled down from Ayr to deliver two workshops to our boys and girls.<\/p>\n<p>Both classes explored <em>Lego Wedo<\/em>, using Lego components and modules alongside coding blocks to construct models from schematics. They were able to automate their models to perform increasingly complex functions; building up from changing light colours and producing a range of sounds to performing motorised functions.\u00a0 The older children applied the use of gears to control motor speed when constructing and programming a cooling fan\u00a0 &#8211; small gear = fast speed, large gear cog = slower speed.<\/p>\n<p>The activities helped support a wide range of skill development, for example:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Computational thinking:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>decomposition &#8211; breaking a complex problem down into steps<\/li>\n<li>abstraction &#8211; focussing on the important parts only<\/li>\n<li>algorithms &#8211; developing step by step solutions to problem solve<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Meta Skills for learning, life and work (Skills 4.0)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Self Management &#8211; focussing, adapting, initiative<\/li>\n<li>Social Intelligence &#8211; communicating, collaborating, leading<\/li>\n<li>Innovation &#8211; curiosity, creativity, sense making, critical thinking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-7113 gallery-columns-3 culminate the investigative session, linking with the theme of growth for this year&#8217;s British Science Week, the older children investigated the key question of:<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;How do certain organisms contribute to the life cycle of plants?<\/p>\n<p>They had to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Explore how different organisms take an active role in plant reproduction<\/li>\n<li>Create and program a model\u00a0of a bee and flower to represent the relationship between the pollinator and the plant<\/li>\n<li>Present and document the different models created to depict plants and their pollinators.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They built a robotic model incorporating gears and infra-red motion sensors etc.\u00a0 The bee is programmed to fly to the flower, emitting a buzzing sound.
