It encompasses a range of behaviours including domestic abuse, sexual violence, coercive control, stalking, online abuse, sexual harassment, exploitation, and harmful gender-based attitudes and behaviours. Evidence demonstrates that gender-based violence can have profound impacts on children and young people&#8217;s health, wellbeing, attainment, attendance, relationships, and future life chances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schools have a critical role in creating safe, inclusive environments where children and young people learn about equality, respect, healthy relationships, consent, and human rights. Educational settings are also well placed to identify concerns early, respond appropriately to disclosures, and work alongside families and partner agencies to promote safety and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">National Policy and Guidance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Scotland&#8217;s national approach is set out through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/policies\/violence-against-women-and-girls\/equally-safe-strategy\/\">Equally Safe: Scotland&#8217;s Strategy for Preventing and Eradicating Violence Against Women and Girls,<\/a> developed by the Scottish Government and COSLA. The refreshed strategy highlights the need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Achieve greater gender equality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intervene early and effectively to prevent violence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximise the safety and wellbeing of women, children and young people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge and address the behaviours of perpetrators. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategy recognises that violence against women and girls is rooted in gender inequality and that prevention requires action across all sectors, including education.
