Active Schools & Community Sport

Active Schools is a programme that has been jointly funded by the Council and sportscotland for over 20 years. It supports school aged young people to take part in physical activity and sport in Dumfries and Galloway.

Each school has an Active Schools Officer who work in partnership with the school to provide free opportunities for children and young people to take part in sport and physical activity. Activities can be before and after school, and during lunchtime.

The collective aim is to increase the opportunities for children and young people to get active, by:

  • providing opportunities for extra curricular sport and physical activity
  • developing links between schools and sports clubs in the local community
  • giving young people the training and support to be sports leaders, coaches and volunteers
  • supporting young people to participate and achieve in school sport competitions and festivals

Active Schools Volunteering:

It would be difficult to provide many of the sport sessions without trained volunteers. We need people to support us by delivering coaching and helping out at our PEPAS events.

Volunteers can support:

  • after school clubs
  • community clubs
  • sporting festivals and competitions
  • holiday programmes
