Educational Psychology Service (EPS)

Dumfries and Galloway Educational Psychology Service (DGEPS) is a statutory educational service for children and young people normally residing in, or looked after by, Dumfries and Galloway council.

The role of an Educational Psychologist can vary depending on the situation and a young person’s needs.  In Dumfries and Galloway the team are usually involved at primary and secondary school ages but can be involved from the early years to the transition into adulthood. Services are normally requested by the child’s school.

Virtual Consultations

Alongside casework, the EPS continue to offer virtual consultation appointments to all educational staff to discuss young people who aren’t known to the Service or to discuss general issues.

Learn more about virtual consultations.

Booking for consultation slots can be made on the following the booking link sent to schools and Head Teachers.

(Please note, when booking virtual consultation, school staff must provide a full email address such as @glow.sch.uk or @ea.dumgal.sch.uk. The virtual consultation booking system will not work with simply @glow).

Pre-RFA Consultation

Pre-RfA consultation is an opportunity to discuss, directly with your school EP, the possible request of assistance of young people to Educational Psychology. This type of consultation should be sought when you feel that virtual consultation will not be appropriate as there are very complex factors or there is a clear EP role over time. It can also be appropriate where you have previously discussed and reviewed a young person in virtual consultation and the agreed strategies have been implemented and not had the desired impact.

Pre-RFA consultation will be required before an RfA is submitted to the Service.

Prior to seeking a pre-RfA consultation, you should seek consent from the parent/carer (and young person if Secondary school aged) for you to have the consultation. Post consultation, you will be required to feed back the outcome. If a file is to be opened, on receipt of the completed RfA the parent/carer will receive a letter from DGEPS advising them that we have opened a file and providing them with contact details for the allocated psychologist.

Pre-RfA consultations can be arranged directly with your EP or via the online consultation booking service. Please note that if using the online booking calendar you must select your own school EP and select the pre-RfA consultation option.

Parent/Carer Consultation

Dumfries & Galloway offers a consultation telephone service for parents/carers of young people who do not have a file with the Service.

Parents/carers can access this service by emailing Supportinglearners@dumgal.gov.uk or phoning 01387 273784. Further information written for parents and carers can be found on the council’s webpage.
