Contraception

Unplanned pregnancies are on the rise in Scotland. Sexual Health is working in collaboration with the School Nurses, Public Health, D&G Council’s Education Department and Youth Work to address the poor uptake of contraception, especially amongst younger people. It’s a national issue; NHS D&G’s uptake figures are comparatively good, but still need to be higher in order to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.

Part of the problem is misinformation on social media, with unfounded negativity against hormonal contraception leading to more people using fertility tracking / natural family planning, which is ineffective. The danger to health from unwanted pregnancies [e.g. blood clots] far outweighs any that are posed by the side-effects of hormonal contraception.

Young women are urged to book appointments with Sexual Health D&G – or their GPs – to discuss which contraception method is right for them. Phone and in-person consultations are available.

Sexual Health D&G recommend the following website for contraception information for young people: https://www.contraceptionchoices.org/

Condoms

Schools can signpost young people age 13+ to Sexual Health D&Gs free online service for condoms at: https://sexualhealthdg.co.uk/condoms-by-post.php

Using this service, condoms are sent out to young people along with a leaflet that includes links to RSHP-approved safe condom use videos. Teachers can also contact the service for free condoms to be sent to the school if a young person is not keen to use the online service or to receive a supply of condoms in school for specific events such as delivering as part of the curriculum. To request condoms by post, email: dg.sexual-health@nhs.scot

Sexual Health have created a poster about their condom service that can be displayed in schools at: Sexual Health D&G – Free Condoms Poster.pdf
