Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO’s)
The Junior Road Safety Officer (JRSO) programme is a vital initiative in primary schools across Scotland, designed to promote road safety awareness and encourage peer education. Approximately 75% of Scotland’s schools are JRSO schools, highlighting the programme’s significant contribution to road safety education nationwide.
The programme involves selecting pupils, typically from Primary 6 or Primary 7, to act as Junior Road Safety Officers. Their role is to raise awareness of road safety issues within their school and the wider community, helping to encourage safer travel choices among their peers.
JRSOs can be supported by a JRSO Co-ordinator, an adult within the school who assists them in carrying out their responsibilities and developing road safety initiatives.
Activities that JRSOs may undertake include:
- Delivering road safety talks to classes and assemblies
- Running road safety competitions and campaigns
- Organising safe and active travel activities
- Promoting road safety through displays, posters and noticeboards
- Encouraging pupils and families to adopt safer travel behaviours
The JRSO ethos is one of pupil empowerment and partnership working, enabling children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
All primary schools are encouraged to participate in the programme. Schools select their JRSOs each year, and newly appointed officers receive handbooks and resources to support them in their role.
