Junior Road Safety Officers
Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) play a very important part in primary schools. The purpose of JRSOs is to raise road safety awareness and promote road safety issues to everyone within their primary school and the wider community.
Some activities that JRSOs can get involved in to bring road safety matters to everyone’s attention are:
- Talk to classes and at assemblies regarding road safety topics
- Run competitions within their school
- Organise safe and active travel activities
- Promote road safety by displaying posters or noticeboards
- Use the www.jrso.com website for ideas and news
75% of Scotland’s schools are JRSO schools. All primaries were invited to join Scotland’s JRSOs schools before the start of the summer holidays. The primary schools choose who will be their JRSOs (usually P7) and upon return JRSO handbooks and goodies are handed out to the new JRSOs. The JRSO ethos is one of pupil empowerment and partnership working that enables children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors.
