Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Wellbeing (MESP)
In Scottish education, the MESP organiser is used as a guide for curriculum planning, teaching practices, and the overall wellbeing support systems in schools. It acknowledges the multidimensional nature of a child’s development and aims to provide a balanced and comprehensive educational experience that addresses their mental, emotional, social, and physical needs.
The MESP organiser is designed to provide a structure for practitioners to promote positive wellbeing and support the needs of students across these four key areas:
Mental wellbeing
Mental wellbeing refers to the health of the mind, the way we think, perceive, reflect on and make sense of the world.
Social wellbeing
Social wellbeing refers to being and feeling secure in relationships with family, friends and community, having a sense of belonging and recognising and understanding our contribution in society.
Emotional wellbeing
Emotional wellbeing refers to recognising, understanding and effectively managing our feelings and emotions.
Physical wellbeing
Physical wellbeing refers to the knowledge, skills and attitudes that we need to understand how physical factors affect our health.
Mental, Emotional, Social and Physical Wellbeing (MESP) Organiser
Mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing are essential for successful learning.
The mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing of everyone within a learning community should be positively developed by fostering a safe, caring, supportive, purposeful environment that enables the development of relationships based on mutual respect. The four aspects of wellbeing are inextricably linked
