Hands Up Scotland Survey (HUSS)

The Hands Up Scotland Survey (HUSS) is the largest national dataset to look at how children travel to school across Scotland.

This year’s survey week is Monday 9th and Friday 13th of September 2024. Schools should conduct the survey on one day within this week.

It is important that the survey is not conducted during part of a Bike or Walk to School Week or any other special cycling or walking promotional activity. Sustrans are looking to increase participation in the survey only, not use the survey to increase walking and cycling levels.

Why take part in the Hands Up Scotland Survey?

The HUSS is the largest national dataset on how children travel to school, and is an Official Statistic in Scotland. With the survey now in its 17th year, it is possible to look at more than a decade of data on how children travel to school in Scotland and your school’s input is vital to the continued success of the survey. By taking part you will be able to monitor your success in promoting healthy and sustainable school travel modes like walking and cycling. In addition, the data you provide allows your local authority to get a picture of school travel patterns at local authority and national level. This information can be used to aid decision making on school travel initiatives. The survey results are also used to allocate national funding to local authorities for active travel initiatives within schools.
