Newsletter – w/c 01.11.2021

Dear Families and Friends of Crossmichael and Gelston Primary Schools,

I hope this newsletter finds you well.   Our children and staff had a lovely time participating in Halloween activities on Friday afternoon.  I hope you enjoy looking at the photographs on the class Facebook pages.

Covid-19 Update

A letter was sent to parents last week explaining the importance of continuing to adhere to the current Covid-19 safety requirements.  We rely on these measures to help us maintain in-school learning for children as we move forward into the winter months.

Sponsored Walk Total

I am absolutely delighted to tell you that we raised £1175.60 by doing our sponsored walk before the October holidays.  Thank you very, very much for your amazing contributions!!  All money raised will be going towards building an outdoor classroom in the school grounds.  We need to raise approximately £10K.

Gelston Parent Council Christmas Fundraising

We had planned to hold a Christmas Market on Saturday 29th November to raise funds to help pay for Christmas parties, the pantomime and other festive activities.  The Parent Council has decided to cancel this event after reading advice from D&G Council about minimising the risk of spreading Covid-19.

We will still go ahead with a raffle and pre-printed books of tickets will be on sale in the next few weeks.  If anyone is able to contribute to hampers then we would appreciate your Christmas themed donations.  It would be wonderful if we could include a large prize in each hamper such as a gift voucher, an overnight stay or similar.  Please contact Pam Shuttleworth (Chairperson) via email at gelstonprimaryschoolparentcouncil@outlook.com if you can help.

Each child has designed a Christmas card.  If you wish to buy a pack of cards with your child’s design on them then please order and pay for them using the online portal.  Details can be found below.

Pupil Progress Reports

At the end of November, parents will receive a brief summary report detailing pupil progress.  We are not yet able to hold parents’ evenings but if you wish to arrange an appointment with your child’s teacher then please contact them directly via email or contact the school office to arrange a telephone appointment.

Lest We Forget – Poppies

If your child wishes to bring in a donation then they can receive a poppy to wear to remember those who lost their lives in World War One and other conflicts.

Best wishes,

October Holidays

Schools are closed from Monday 11th October – Friday 22nd October.  Pupils and staff return on Monday 25th October.

School Halloween Celebrations

Pupils will be invited to join in with Halloween activities on Friday 29th October and may arrive at school dressed in their Halloween costumes.  (Please do not send your child to school with accessories such as broom sticks and masks.  We also ask that face paints are worn prior to arriving at school for Health and Safety reasons. )

Decorating Shop Windows in Castle Douglas

Pupils from Crossmichael and Gelston Primary Schools have been asked to create Halloween displays to decorate several shop windows in the town and in return the shops will have the name of the schools noted on the display.

In the October holidays, your child can participate in a scavenger hunt organised by Castle Douglas Toddler Group.  A letter will be hidden in each shop window and the letters will spell some Halloween words.
We are selling the scavenger hunt forms for 50p in school.  All profits will go to Castle Douglas Toddler Group but they are kindly donating £10 to each school who takes part and every child who enters will be entered into a prize draw.
To be in with a chance of winning, you should upload your child’ s photograph of them wearing their Halloween costume along with their completed form to the ‘Castle Douglas half term Halloween scavenger hunt’ Facebook page.  Please do not return the completed forms to school.

Newsletter – w/c 20.09.2021

Dear Families and Friends of Crossmichael and Gelston Primary Schools,

Covid-19 Update

You will be aware that the First Minister made an announcement on 16th September and afterwards we sent out a copy of a letter from the Clinical Director, Professor Jason Leitch (link below) which provides a national update of how Covid-19 cases are managed in schools.

Letter to Parents and Carers from Jason Leitch National Clinical Director – 16 September 2021

If we have a positive case of Covid-19 in school then I will send a letter to parents of pupils who are in the same class to inform you that there has been a positive case in your child’s class.

If you receive a letter then we advise that your child takes a lateral flow test that evening.  If they are negative then they can return to school as normal.  If positive, then the household should isolate and your child should have a PCR test.  This will help us to minimise the risk of spreading the virus in school.

Lateral flow test kits can be collected from local pharmacies or ordered over the Internet.

Please continue to keep us informed of test results so that we can accurately record positive cases or cases where a child has become symptomatic.

I am pleased to report that we have not yet had any positive cases at Gelston Primary School and there are no new cases at Crossmichael Primary School this week.

Lockerbie Manor Trip for P6/7 Pupils

I am delighted to report that I have booked a three day residential trip to Lockerbie Manor (Manor Adventure) outdoor education centre for our P6/7 pupils from 7th-9th February 2022.  The cost per pupil is £150 and this includes bus travel.

Although residential trips are not advised at the moment, we are hoping that the rules will have changed by February.  Lockerbie Manor have agreed to a full refund in the event that the trip needs to be cancelled.

I sent a survey to parents/ guardians of P6/7 pupils to ask if they were happy for us to proceed and the feedback was very positive.

We will provide further information via letter to P6/7 parents.  Please be aware that the £50 deposit is due by 31st October.

Gelston Parent Council

Gelston Parent Council met last night for our AGM and the office bearers were voted in.  They are:

Chairperson = Pam Shuttleworth

Secretary = Justine Hunter-Brown

Treasurer = Kay Davies

Please join the Gelston Parent Council Facebook page for regular updates.

We have agreed to have a Christmas Market next term.  More details will follow soon.  Pupils will also be designing Christmas cards and you will be able to order them online soon.  All money raised will go towards building our outdoor classroom.

The Parent Council is applying for grant money to help fund an outdoor classroom for the school.  (We need around £10K.)  We hope that this resource can also be used by our local community.  In order for our grant applications to be successful, we need to demonstrate how the school is linking in with local heritage.  If you have any ideas then please do get in touch with us.

Newsletter – Monday 23.08.2021

Dear Families and Friends of Crossmichael and Gelston Primary Schools,

It is lovely to see everyone settling back into school after the summer holidays.  We welcome all new pupils and their families and we look forward to getting to know you.

Covid-19 Update

You will be aware that the number of Covid-19 cases has risen dramatically in Dumfries and Galloway over the last few weeks.  Please rest assured that we continue to take all precautions to ensure that everyone is safe.

If your child or someone in your household is displaying any of the following symptoms then please isolate and book a PCR test:

  1. Loss or change in sense of taste or smell
  2. High temperature/ fever
  3. New continuous cough

What happens if there is a confirmed positive Covid-19 case in school?

If the PCR test result is positive then you should inform the school.  Test and Protect will contact you and inform you of next steps.  They will also identify close contacts and they will be advised to isolate and to go for a PCR test.

The school will follow advice from Public Health Scotland and will distribute a ‘warn and inform’ letter to the wider school community as advised.  This may mean that everyone receives a letter or it may only be distributed to one class.

Please try not to worry if a positive case is reported as we have stringent measures in place to keep us all safe.

Primary 1 Buddies

We are delighted to see our new P1 pupils settling in to school and they have now been ‘buddied’ with older pupils.

Musical Instrumental Tuition

School dinners cost £1.90 per day but are now free for all P1-4 pupils.  In January, P5 will also receive free meals and in August 2022, P6 and P7 will not need to pay either.  Meals should be ordered using the online ordering template sent to parents.   Here is a copy of the current menu:
