It brings together key partners including health, social work, education, Police Scotland, and third sector organisations to reduce harm and improve outcomes for individuals, families, and communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For Child Protection Coordinators (CPCs), understanding the role of the ADP is essential, as substance use can have a significant impact on the safety, wellbeing, and development of children and young people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the ADP Matters for Safeguarding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Substance use within families may increase risks relating to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Neglect or inconsistent care<\/li>\n<li>Domestic abuse or household instability<\/li>\n<li>Poor physical and emotional wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>Reduced school attendance and engagement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ADP works to address these risks through prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery services, many of which directly support families with children.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Functions of the ADP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ADP:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Develops and delivers the local alcohol and drug strategy<\/li>\n<li>Commissions and coordinates services for individuals and families<\/li>\n<li>Supports early intervention and prevention programmes<\/li>\n<li>Promotes recovery and reduces stigma<\/li>\n<li>Works collaboratively with partners to improve outcomes for children affected by substance use<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This work aligns with national policy and the principles of Getting it Right for Every Child, ensuring a whole-family approach to support.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Child Protection Coordinators should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be aware of local alcohol and drug services and referral pathways<\/li>\n<li>Understand how to escalate concerns where substance use impacts on a child\u2019s safety or wellbeing<\/li>\n<li>Work closely with multi-agency partners, including services linked to the ADP<\/li>\n<li>Ensure concerns are recorded and shared appropriately in line with child protection procedures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Where substance use is identified as a risk factor, CPCs should follow guidance within the National Guidance for Child Protection in Scotland and ensure timely multi-agency involvement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supporting Children and Families<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Children affected by alcohol and drug use may require additional support to ensure they feel safe, included, and able to achieve.
